Bad gym behavior - vent

"Men (it's always the men) who don't wipe their sweat off the machine. Yes, that Seinfeld episode. Gross, gross, gross."

That's mine! There are a multiple cleaning stations around the gym -- I've taken to wiping the treadmill down beforehand and I don't care who thinks I'm a germophobe.

They also never re-rack their weight plates. Dumbbells, yes, but weight plates on the hammer strength equipment, never. I often complain or get someone else to remove the 300 pounds of weight so I can put on my 45s.

We have a princess at my gym who shows up to the same class (held three times a week) ALWAYS 10 minutes late. Then she expects people to move out of the way for her. Drives me crazy!

I might be in the wrong here, but it irritates me when I'm doing sets on a weight machine and someone asks to work in-- when the gym is almost empty. I totally understand the request to work in when the gym floor is crowded, but when there's nobody there, I feel like-- can't you go and do another exercise on one of the dozens of open machines? Why do you have to use this particular one, right now?

Like I said, I may be in the wrong, but that's my pet peeve at the gym. That, and not re-racking weights.

I'm more of a free weight kind of girl, but I do use some machines (smith, leg press, etc). I have done this and the reason is because I'm doing a specific set of exercises in a specific order. When it's a bi-tri-back day I do certain exercises back to back and sometimes they require little rest in between. I can only reorder my routine so much or it's not as effective.

Now, not re-racking is irritaing.

Showoffs.

Two of the "class" rooms were totally empty, so I went into one to do some stretches. A woman comes in and starts doing handstands RIGHT next to me. Like 2.5 feet away. There's two large, empty rooms, and some bitchy showoff in a green lululemon jacket can't help but think right next to me is the perfect spot for her handstands.

Handstands? Like yoga or mary lou retton?

Like Mary Lou Retton. It was really bizarre. She seemed starved for attention, and I couldn't hold back a giggle. She left about a minute later.

People who don't re-rack weights drive me insane.

i also had an annoying experience the other day-
gym was really busy and there are only 2 racks for things like squats.

someone was doing deadlifts right in front of the rack. and thus blocking/preventing anyone from using the rack.

Lots of people do this at my gym. I don't get the big deal. We have about 5 squat racks but only one mat area to DL. They were probably using the bar off the rack to dead lift anyway so you wouldn't have been able to use it regardless.

I DL in front of the rack. Where am I supposed to do it?

my gym only has 2 squat racks which are always in high demand and it was at a very busy time. There is plenty of floor space and 12 different (flat, incline, decline) benched for bench press so plenty of extra bars lying around and floor space to do deadlifts somewhere else.

If it wasn't a busy time or if there were a lot of unused racks I wouldn't care, but like i said there are only 2 squat racks and unlike deadlifts which can be done anywhere, you really need a rack for certain exercises.

Annoyance: The two BFFs (always women) who talk nonstop, the ENTIRE time they are working out. You see each other every day, how can you possibly have so much to talk about? It's 5:30AM, for God's sake.

YES! They are on the ellipticals next to me (going quite leisurely and talking up a storm the whole time). Mostly they complain about their husbands (ex- or current) and brag about their high school kids. And before you tell me not to eavesdrop, I have my earbuds in with music on. I can still hear them. Ugh!!!

I don't deadlift 95 lbs, so I use the rack like I was instructed by my trainer. The smaller plates cause the bar to sit too low.
