Except its not a sketchy area..

It was at night and isolated. If you can afford a nanny, you can afford to drive her or pay her enough to get a car for God's sake.

But here the PPs are, more concerned about political correctness

You and other PPs made the inference that the nanny's employers were negligent, which may or may not be the case. We have no facts to prove that. But by adding in her profession, you automatically slant the article.

Hey, OP - would you have posted this if the headline had been - Bus driver robbed at gun point? But b/c nanny was in the headline, you stopped. It becomes THAT MUCH MORE pathetic, right? And yet, the crime is the crime.

So automatically, many of you started to question the employer (the mother, I'm sure) for not caring properly for her nanny.

And no, I'd never allow that to happen to my nanny. She drives, however, and it's never at night - for us, at least.

So nanny was added in to attract a specific group. And I'd venture to say that that group - represented by many of you who posted - is mostly moms!

I'm really glad the nanny's profession was mentioned. It's about time. I'm a nanny to.

But this is the thing (and I'm not the OP) but its a very nice area! It's not isolated and not especially dark. People are out jogging, walking their dogs, kids play soccer and play on the playground at the school. It's not an area where anyone would thing to not walk around at night. That is why this story is so disturbing. If Shepard park isn't safe, where is?

Please. It's not Georgetown, Dupont Circle or Cleveland Park, where you do actually have evening pedestrian traffic. The nanny was targeted because she was isolated.

And it is still not clear why OP mentioned Silver Spring, as it has nothing to do with the story.

I wouldn't walk around that neighborhood at night by myself! It is not a safe area IMO.

The woman quoted in the article should be ashamed of herself for not offering the nanny a ride.

Do they do these things at night? I have been through that neighborhood in the evening and it is deserted. Sensibly most people don't walk around at night b/c it is not safe.

Interesting that the homeowner is too scared to walk her dog at night but would let the nanny leave her house walking in that poorly lit area. No way I wouldn't call my nanny a taxi or offer her a ride.

I walk my dog at night (11 pm sometimes) all the time. Stop living in fear Chicken Little and commenting on something which you have NO experience.

Hello. The nanny didn't have a dog to help "protect" her. Your personal experience is irrelevant here, Chicken Little.

I hope the Parks at Walter Reed development improves Shepherd Park. The posters who commented on the streets being isolated are correct -- especially at night in winter -- but it is generally a friendly neighborhood. Proximity to the MD border has been given as a reason this neighborhood is targeted by criminals -- it's very easy to cross police jurisdiction quickly.

Did they say where the nanny had to walk that late?
