I am a female with HSV and after I got it from my ex I met my husband, but in 8 years have never given it to him. And this includes lots of unprotected sex. Just use condoms and have her on valtrex.

It's prevalent enough that it'll make life tough on your if you automatically rule out partners based on a superficial infection that generally doesn't cause anything but unwarranted shame.

You've probably cleared this virus by now. HSV doesn't last forever.

it is a forever gift.

Yeah. PP, HSV=Herpes, HPV=genital warts

My DH has herpes. We've been married almost 10 years, and I've never contracted it, though he's never had an outbreak during that time either. We don't have protected sex (if he had an outbreak, we would). No Valtrex. Has not impacted our life together in any way, shape, or form.

Deal breaker for me. I slutted it up in high school but thankfully never got anything.

I guess that if I have it then I must be symptomless then because I've never ever had a cold sore. I know a couple people who do get them and I avoid them like the plague when they do. And absolutely never let anyone in my family share utensils or anything with them at any time. Nasty!! I could never kiss someone who gets them.

I do know I'm CMV negative.

I found out I had Herpes when I was pregnant with my second child. My doctor said it is common for herpes to flare up for the first time during pregnancy due to hormones and I had contracted it prior to my husband. She also said it is common forr people to have their first outbreak when they are elderly and their immune system is comprimised.

I had that one outbreak and valtrex cleared it up within 24hrs.

Sorry to be flip, but its no big deal.

What's CMV?

If you are referring to Herpes, there is NO blood test to accurately test for it. NONE. These is one lab in the US that can do it with 50% accuracy, but the test costs a few hundred dollars and is not covered by insurance. The run of the mill test a doc would do I'd a complete waste.

Exactly and even the majority of those who are aware they have it are probably not disclosing. PPs are probably walking around with it and don't realize it.

What happens if your kids get cold sores? Most exposure for that is childhood and teens. Will you avoid them like the plague too? Or manage it like a health issue?

I'm not advocating that you drop your hygiene practices. We do the same in our household. But kids are exposed at school, at friends, at relatives. You can't control everything.

I got my first cold sore at 40 when I caught RSV from my infant son. It was the worst cold I'd ever had and lack of sleep from being a new mom meant my immunity was low. Doctor said I'd probably had the virus from an early age and it was just now showing up.

My 7yr old gets cold sores. He's had them since he was 18mos old. He was never in daycare and at the time was an only. My DH and I have never gotten a cold sore. However he probably still contracted it from us. You don't have to be symptomatic to be a carrier.
