Fear of Dentist

Also I would avoid a dentist who takes HMO's or other crappy insurance. Most dentists who are really good are fee for service.

Good luck!

Wow. You really think only the money grabbers are good?

When it comes to my health I only want the best. Sometimes the best is not cheap.

Fair enough, but that isn't the point. The point is that to assume that not taking insurance is an indicator of quality (to the point that those who do accept it are to be avoided) is a pretty narrow minded approach. In my experience, the best doctors are those who view their profession not exclusively from a profit perspective, and deal with the hassle of insurance in order to serve a broader part of their community. Not every doctor who takes insurance does so because they can't get enough patients who pay OOP. The only dentist who hasn't been trying to sell me unnecessary procedures (unnecessary by the judgment of a dentist friend) was one who accepted insurance, including HMOs.

To assume dentists are all out to scam people is an insult.

Nobody said anything to that effect.

Being a "money grabber" (a hyperbolic term I used to designate those who don't want to bother with insurance because it is much less profitable) and a scammer is not the same thing.

Fee for service is a term used in dental insurance. Fee for service allows you to see any dentist. Gold standard insurance.
