Stay classy, Sidwell

PP - Sorry about the ridiculous typos!

As a graduate of the best private school in my hometown (not this town!), I can attest to the fact that even in private schools it's still the case that smart kids have to hide their smarts.

I am against making kids involved in politics. They are kids and cannot vote and are not mature enough to form opinions independent of what their parents think.
If the political situation turns sour it can be a bad thing to be the school that chanted obama.
I would expect these fance smanchy schools to promote sportsmanship and leave the politics out.

Not even middle or high school kids?

Agree on the sportsmanship concept, however. That plus chivalry seem to be dead. Not sure I miss chivalry (except when I was pregnant standing on the metro), but a return to sportsmanship by HS kids everywhere would be welcomed by me, at least.

Another classic Prep cheer when the other team scores a touchdown or makes a good play, they chant "That's alright, that's ok, you're going to work for us some day." I've had a lot of bosses, but none who went to Prep...

Yeah, you dork. Probably because of the jobs you worked at.

People are upset about this? Really?

I can"t believe I missed this piece in the Washington Post when it was first published (and before I joined DCUM). Sush behavior by the Sidwell students is in very poor taste, and the coaches or teachers at the sporting event should have put a quick stop to it. And parents should have a talk with their kids about humility.

I'm still waiting for Maureen Dowd's piece about this shocking behavior.

Sidwell is getting a new Dean which may help. The prior Dean and former head of school did not go to many sporting events and the Sidwell basketball fan crowd has developed into a very obnoxious entity. Sidwell is a great school but kids and parents ran roughshod over prior admin so many look to the incoming admin with hopes that the tone and behavior will improve. I would pick the Sidwell parents as the most whiny and over-involved in town, though, so the New Head will have his work cut out.

While the chant is a bit on the lame side -- these kids need to up their game before college, those kinds of cheers aren't going to rattle the likes of UNC or Georgetown, to those who are outraged, I can only say: get a grip. I mean, really.

sidwell totally clamped down the next game and wouldn't let the kids chant any thing in response to the opposing team. unlike most sidwell sporting events, faculty and administration actually showed up for that game to enforce their ban. There have been far worse chants from every school in the area. Normally, i think they are clever and sometimes very funny. I'm often impressed by how spontaneous the kids call and respond en masse. but i don't like it when any school singles out a particular kid which sometimes happens.

Too bad they never reported Maret's chant in response: "You're still Bush League."
