A nursing home is different than a assisted living facility. There are not "transportations" to anywhere int he community from a nursing home, unless it is to the hospital.

Same consequence as giving away your money. It makes you ineligible for a period of time. As an aside, having worked for years in admissions and discharge planning for nursing homes and being married to a nursing home administrator, I can tell you this. There is nothing free. If you don't pay or have a payor source, you aren't getting in. And, if you get in and then refuse to pay, you'll be sued.

I agree that this is like stealing money from all of us taxpayers...but not that different from public sector employees who work 20-30 years and then draw a guaranteed pension for the next 30 to 50 years while, often, getting into second careers and revenue sources.

TOTALLY, absolutely different. My dad gave up a lucrative career in the private sector (lawyer) to work for the federal government for 1/4 the wages. He earned every penny of his pension over the last 32 years. Plus, this is totally above-board and not trying to "game the system" (aka: steal). Unless the worker is breaking a rule, they're doing nothing wrong. Distributing assets to qualify as "poor" is totally different.

Haven't read this whole thread but OP my father is in a nursing home on Medicaid. Why on Earth would you want to do that. And having just gone through the whole Medicaid process they will turn over absolutely every single stone big or small to find out where her money has gone. We were told that if they found that we had been "gifted" money that could have gone to his care we would be prosecuted for fraud. Trust me when I tell you they look at EVERYTHING. They are fully aware when a family tries to hide money. Also you have to have their entire estate down to less than $2,500 in order to even get Medicaid. Cannot figure out why you should live high on the horse while your mom is warehoused in a nursing home. So good luck with that OP.

Just wanted to correct a misperception out there. There aren't "medicaid" nursing homes and "private pay" nursing homes, by and large. There are nursing homes that do or do not accept the medicaid daily rate as their full daily charge. There are also nursing homes that will set aside a certain number of beds where they will take the medicaid rate, but most beds are a higher rate. It sounded like some people believe there are government run "medicaid nursing homes." There are not.

My mom has over 2 million and a pension. I would rather she be comfortable and live her life until the end rather than kill her off now and take the money for myself. If she had no money I would offer to pay for it or bring her to my house.

PP with a father in a nursing home and is on Medicaid. This is exactly right. Medicaid does not run the homes. That said the ones that do accept Medicaid sadly aren't a nice place to end up.

Nursing homes are disgusting. If I ever have to go to a nursing home, I want to go to the best one available.... not one with a heavy medicaid population and incompetent staff. What is the point of saving lots of money just to live in a dump when I'm old?
