It's "demeaning" to commute on a crowded metro? That's hilarious. I can definitely acknowledge that there are advantages to living way out in the far burbs, but a better commute is not one of them. Some people will make up the randomest shit....

It's terrible Metro is so crowded and I always feel bad for the people who get on in Arlington having to plead with others to make room on the cars and then ending up pressed against random strangers whose levels of hygiene vary and staring at the people who boarded earlier and have seats. It just reinforces how crappy it is to live in Arlington

Yes, it's just horrible!

And, although we aren't there yet, I have a reverse commute into the suburbs.

Why are you ony talking about what the moms do?

Why are you such a freak show?

The rubbing up against strangers on the Orange Line is probably the most exciting thing that happens all day to a lot of people in Arlington. It's the epitome of dull.

Yes, it is godawful. Everything about Arlington is absolutely horrible. The schools, the commute, the crime, the ugly cats. You should stay far, far away.

OMG. The ugly cats were just awful this year. We might start spraying for them in the spring. Has anyone tried Ugly Cat Squad?

Ugly Cat Squad? Are you mad? With all the chemicals they use?! Much better off trying my grandmother's advise -- a little bit of vinegar and water, sprayed one every other day.

I know - the chemicals are horrible. I'll try the vinegar first, but I might be forced to pollute the environment because those cats are just SO DAMN UGLY!

Because I don't have nearly as good of an idea regarding what the dads do. To my knowledge, none stay at home though.

Well sure, but this was a question about commuting, and you answered talking about what the mommies do. Which was kind of weird.

Sorry, I happen to have better insight into the careers and commuting realities of my friends (I happen to be a mom) but far less insight into the day-to-day lives of their husbands. It's visibility into half the residents of the street, right?

My humble apologies if it's weird that I couldn't provide insight for the OP into only a subsection of my neighbors.

The commute really depends on how flexible your schedule it. I drive and if I leave my house at 9, I can be at work near Metrocenter by 9:30. If I leave at 8, I will get to work about 9:15. My commute is way, way better than my friends near AU or the Zoo.

Yeah, if you live in Arlington, you have to pretend Metro is a mosh pit. It totally sucks to get on at Clarendon or Court House and have to beg for people to make room. But it's only about five stops to Metro Center, even though the 10-15 minutes can feel longer when you're pinned up against people you don't know.

Funny. I got a seat both ways, today.

We know lots of people who commute to DC by Metro from Ballston as well as a good number who reverse commute to Fairfax County.

We live in Rock Spring and DH commutes to Tysons and sometimes Reston.

Very rare, at least during rush hour.

Many times an Arlington metro commute takes longer than farther out stations because the trains are full and you have to let some pass. Kind of messed up that places father away get better commute times than Arlington rendering proximity useless.
