I read both, and I disagree.

Fortunately, I have kids in public and private schools, so I get to read both fora.

The fights on the MCPS forum are about 2.0 and magnet programs, individual schools, and what to do with bad teachers. Oh yeah, and some trolls: the anti-immigrant nutjob, the crazy Tiger Mom who thinks everything MCPS does is to exclude Asian kids from magnets, and the bizarro private school parent who keeps showing up on the MCPS forum to tell us how much public schools suck.

The fights on the Private School forum are all about class, household income, whether you can get and/or deserve FA on $200K/year.

For shear entertainment value, the Private School forum wins, hands down!.

I don't agree the MCPS forum is "just as vituperative." Sure, you get the race-baiting on both, for MCPS it's in the context of FARMS and for Private Schools it's in the context of alleged admissions preferences. You get people hating on Starr and people hating on certain heads of school. But you get so much more vituperation, and so much variation in the vituperation, on the Private School forum!

My favorite private school forums are about how people are barely making it on $X's. That is real entertainment. They usually begin with something like I make $350k and is Sidwell really worth it? We don't have any equity in our $1.3M home, have $50K in car loans, $200k in student loans, pay our nanny $40K and for our sanity must take 2 vacations to Europe each year. I'm being a little melodramatic but not much.

In the public school forum, my favorite topics are why 2.0 stinks as they get really animated between people who are haters and those who defend it in the name of social justice or don't see a big difference between now and what it was before. My kids are in private so I really don't know if I would like or hate 2.0. If they are watering down and teaching to the bottom like so many say and I was a public school parent, I wouldn't be laughing. It's hard to tell fact from fiction there. However, if I ever did consider public school, I would definitely look hard at what changes were being made in 2.0

There is so much hate because of envy. Parents and children at Sidwell, STA, GDS etc arent on here spewing hate. Its the people that didnt get in these schools that try to tear them down to make themselves feel better. To convince themselves it OK they arent part of the club.

Very few people apply out of these schools once they are in. There are exceptions, but very few. Parents and children are happy in these schools and the envious and jealous hate that fact. It helps them feel better to try to tear these people and instituitons down.

Truth hurts - but its mostly about trying to make themselves feel better and good about themselves.

If we're here for entertainment, it's valid to ask which provides the better entertainment.

It seems to me a big problem is that while some of you post snark here for entertainment, other of us are actually trying to exchange useful information. Maybe we should create a separate education forum for people who squabble for entertainment.

Im the person who posted this and my child goes to public school. These are my observations and they are the truth. So many people are just jealous and envious. Current parents of these three schools arent on here saying negative things, its just those who didnt get in. Sorry but its the truth.

To answer OP's question: this poster explains why so much hatred.

After reading what he/she posted above, I feel like I need to take a shower. To the PP who bemoans the fact that people see this board as entertainment, you need to find a way to corral your jerks like this one. Im sure its someone whose kid goes to a Big 3 and went to a great school creating a legacy for their child and you call that obnoxious. Jealousy and envy arent great qualities to have.

Why would 8:50 and 9:08 say they are Big 3 parents, if they aren't Big 3 parents? Have you read their posts?

You make the same grammatical mistakes as the author of the "I dropped my kid off at Sidwell today" thread. Lots of posters questioned inconsistencies in your narrative, suggesting you're not for real, although I wasn't one of those posters. I will respectfully submit that until you have a kid at these schools you really don't know what they are like. I will also wish you luck with your application.
