Changing the Redskins team name

Anonymous
Actually, due the present political climate, I find the "Washington" in the name much more offensive than the "Redskins" I think we should just call them the "Redskins".

Besides, if they want the name changed, they can pool their casino dollars and buy it. Otherwise - tough titty.

Maybe not today but at some point Dan will make the obvious business decision and will change the name. When he changes the name, he will make more money than if he keeps it the same. (that may, in fact, determine the timing of the decision)

The trick will be to do it in a way that makes it look like he is making the change because he is such a great guy.

Never, ever happen.

Here's the best argument I heard so far...

If you can't go up to a Native American and call them a Redskin to their face, then it's an offensive slur.

It's all about money as to why Dan Snyder hasn't made the change. It will cost a lot of money to re-brand the team, change the logo, print new paraphrenalia, etc.

FWIW, I've lived in DC my whole life. I lived through the glorious Gibbs era, Theisman, Riggo and never thought of the team name as offensive. Til someone put it to me as above.

The only people really offended by this are white liberal Americans.

You know that joke was lame to begin with and is tired now already, right?

Are you normally ugly, or do you just act the sphincter on the Internet?

Yes, I am sure you are right-there couldn't possibly be people from native communities who would be offended by a slur that refers specifically to their pigment

They were a real and potent threat, that's why they were killed, in accordance with the values of the time the killing was done in. They tortured and killed an awful lot of people as well, raping women and cutting the skin off of people in strips, roasting and eating it.

It's all well and good to feel sorry now, as we live in this land now, but please don't go all we killed the poor peaceful Indians on me.
you must be a gem in real life.

Truth hurts, there? The original inhabitants of this land weren't peaceful, spiritual people. They were pretty awful by modern standards.
right. and what's your explanation formthe europeans who came over and did the same? plus ran the institution of slavery? you really are a gem.

The Europeans were acting according to the standards of the time: new country, conquer it. If you can't fight back, well....

And an awful lot of Europeans died too, of exposure and starvation and disease. It wasn't a cakewalk by any means. The Indians were only marginally more primitive than the people who conquered them.

Also, you do realise that most of the slaves were sold to slavers by their own people? And that at the time the colonies were founded, a good number of the colonists were transported criminals?

I can't speak for any group of people, but my grandfather is a full blooded Cherokee, and the name doesn't bother him or any of the rest of my family at all. Honestly, the last time we spoke about it, he was more concerned with the "Wizards" because that name makes him think of the KKK.

Go with Fighting Irish, we would be proud.

First of all, they shouldn't even be called Washington anymore since they are in Maryland.

Sick of teams keeping 'city names' but not even being located in the same city.
