as a rep from the oneida nation said, indiana heard the slur "redskins" as they were dragged and killed over the years. sick. just sick.
i guarantee that if this were in reference to a slur on anither minority (asian, black, jewish), there would be no pushback. yet again, american indians get bypassed and ignored. |

I take offense at Notre Dame and no one ever suggests they change their name. Redskin isn't even in American vernacular like so many other slurs, it just isn't. You're kidding yourself if you think it is.
Oh, and the team was born in Boston, not Washington. HTTR |
Maybe it's not in your vernacular because there aren't Indians anymore in DC area? |

Hello, the American Indians lost. It's fun to feel sorry for someone when they aren't a threat: that is why we like wolves, and mountain lions, and American Indians. They were a real and potent threat, that's why they were killed, in accordance with the values of the time the killing was done in. They tortured and killed an awful lot of people as well, raping women and cutting the skin off of people in strips, roasting and eating it.
It's all well and good to feel sorry now, as we live in this land now, but please don't go all we killed the poor peaceful Indians on me. |

I think the minute Dan Snyder invoked the Pine Ridge Reservation as helping George Allen design the helmet emblem in 1972 and the tribe that lived there pushed back and said, "that never happened and by the way we think the name is offensive" that should have been the clue to switfly drop it.
It is not true that a "majority" of American Indians are OK with the name. http://america.aljazeera.com/watch/shows/the-stream/the-stream-officialblog/2013/10/18/native-americansspeakupaboutredskinsnamecontroversy.html The survey frequently referenced is 9 years old. Nine years ago the majority of people opposed gay marriage, too. |
That makes no sense. But I actually grew up in the shadows of the Oneida Indian Nation and have been listening to Ray Hallbritter for 25 years. The "Rez" as its called has a magnificent casino and two outstanding golf courses. That Tiger Woods plays on once a year. No sympathy whatsoever. |
The real cruelty is how Native Americans have been and are being treated, exemplified by the disgusting living conditions and education/ career prospects in reservations. It would be difficult to think of any other country where native populations live worse. The name thing is just a "feel good" distraction from that. |
This is the huge argument for me. If you heard the term "Redskin" 10,000 times, 9,999 of those times it would be referring to the team, and maybe the one other time it would be used as the slur. And OP, the NFL has zero authority over the name change. The decision is Snyder's. |

| I think the name will be changed eventually. I also think that is really unfortunate. |
you must be a gem in real life. |
Truth hurts, there? The original inhabitants of this land weren't peaceful, spiritual people. They were pretty awful by modern standards. |
