You were probably eating well more than 2000 calories a day before, which is why you are experiencing such shock. What does myfitnesspal tell you to eat, when you shoot for 1 lb/week weight loss? (How much do you have to lose? If less than 10, .5 is probably more reasonable.) I eat about 2100-2300 to lose weight, but I'm tall and pretty active.

Myfitnesspal tells me to eat right around 1500 given my weight, age, height and activity level. I'm in my 50's and only work out a couple times a week, so I'm sure that's part of the reason. Honestly, I need to lose about 30 lbs total, but I'd settle for 20.

OP, I found this thread and wanted to check in and see how you're doing? I am trying to cut calories and don't know where to start!

Easiest way to start is the least dramatic--smaller portions of the foods you are currently eating. Take liquids. What are you drinking each day? Milk, Orange Juice, Coke? Cut down the sizes of the things you drink and replace that with an equal (if not more) amount of water. Take an 8 oz orange juice and make it a 4 oz orange juice. Then move to lunch. Maybe not eat two slices of bread in a sandwich but do it with one. Cut back on the snacks like chips that you are eating.

This is just to start--you don't have to make a radical reshuffle of your menu, just smaller sizes. As you get going, you can then start to identify some of the big 'bad' items on your diet and substitute them with slightly healthier / lower calorie alternatives. Then you can make great adjustments knocking off some items from your diet entirely and replacing them with healthier options.

It's a relatively simple way to start. You don't want to get so frustrated from the get go that you give up.

Little steps.

This is a great advice.
