Are we the only family on DCUM that doesn't belong to a pool?

Anonymous
We don't. I hate the pool but that's really because I can't swim and its very stressful for me to watch a 2 yr old and 4 yr old in that situation. Obviously if my parents had taken me to the pool and taught me how to swim things would be different. We intend to join a pool next year because as uncomfortable as I am, I don't want to pass that fear onto my children. Hopefully the more we go and the more comfortable they are in the water the more willing they will be to take lessons.

How much does it cost to join a pool. ?

I don't. We have no community pool and since I work full time and the cost of joining a neighboring community pool isn't worth it to me as we would only make it a few times a year. If I were a SAHM, I definitely would be a pool member. But I'm not, so, I don't. We go to public pools a few times a year and hit the beach for a summer vaca so we get in some pool time.

We have a summer pass to the county outdoor pools -- but I'm guessing that doesn't count as "belonging to a pool".

Why do people pay to use a pool when they are plenty of free and nice municipal ones? I'm not trying to be snarky; I just honestly don't know. What are the added benefits?

All over DC: Wilson Aquatic Center, Francis Pool, Volta Pool, Jelleff Pool, etc etc. Some are better than others; the ones I've listed are clean and nice...

But they're only free for DC residents. We don't live in DC.

I wouldn't belong but my son is obsessed.

I would imagine that with their wealth and prosperity, MoCo and Fairfax County would have free pools for their residents. Look into it. You can use DC pools for a nominal fee.

Then you would imagine wrong -- at least for Montgomery County, where the cost for county residents is $4 per kid and $6 per adult. (Compared to the "nominal fee" for non-DC residents of $4 per kid and $7 per adult.)

So joining a pool would be cheaper? Again, what are the added benefits? I'm imagining cabana boys who serve pina coladas.

+1
I didn't have a clue pools were so big until I came to DCUM.

That's it? How much does it cost for the season on average? Are there free towels and stuff like that?
