Do you have a child at E.L. Haynes Charter School?

We are trying to decide on a K spot. I'd love to hear more recent comments from current parents. I'd also like to hear more about the "Responsive Classroom". Anyone with kids with SPD at the school? Thanks for any feedback.

Responsive classroom is a social curriculum which imputes that social education is as important as cognitive--they go hand in hand in the classroom. It is characterized by morning meeting and greetings, guided discover (talking about the purpose and proper use of classroom materials), class meeting about social issues, chimes instead of raised voices to call a group to order, core values of responsibility etc.
It is as effective as the institution that implements it. Sometimes a school can go a little too far with responsive classroom and it takes on a Stepford kids quality, but if it is used in a measured way it is a nice curriculum.

It does sound nice, anyone want to chime in about how it is implemented at Haynes? Thanks.

What are the odds of getting a spot? If you don't get one the first time and then attend a DCPS can you keep applying for a spot year after year?

My son was in the high teens on the waitlist for kindergarten and he got a spot last week. We turned it down but there is definitely movement on the waitlist for this fall.

There will be movement on the K waitlist anyway, we just got a call - they are adding a K class next year. Not sure if we will take it or not, still hoping to get more feedback from current parents.
