Do you have a child at E.L. Haynes Charter School?

@ 14:33

The only one here obsessed (which is what you meant, as opposed to "obsessive") is you - with your negativity. I am not on the board at Yu Ying, but I'm happy to mitigate your misinformation and slurs and I'll continue to do so. Once again I encourage you to do your homework and correct your ignorance before spouting off. The Yu Ying Board is not the same as the Dupont International Board (though once again, I personally can't imagine what difference it would make, maybe you could elaborate on that point?).

Once again I'll reiterate that there aren't enough charter school placements to serve all the families who want them. A family that is interested in applying to Haynes or any other charter is well advised to apply to several schools in order to cover their bases. This is reality talking. Now, is Yu Ying new? Yes. So what? Haynes was founded in 2004 which means it was new four years ago. Capitol City in 2000. Two Rivers in 2003/04.

Yu Ying offers something that none of those others do, and for that reason some families who rejected those three chose to send their children to Yu Ying. You obviously are uncomfortable with competition but the reality is that it is here. And you are not doing parents at ANY DC school - public, private, or charter - a favor by trying to shout out or shut down genuinely well-intended efforts to impart useful information.

By the way, I hope you're kidding with your tangent about the PTA. Certainly an active and engaged PTA is important at any school, but it's hardly responsible for creating its vision.

I genuinely hope your child has someone other than you to teach reading comprehension!

P.S. "Nut-job?" Nice ad hominem. Did you hone your debating skills by watching sitcoms? Or was it cartoons?

How did this become a Yu Ying Thread? OP here...looking to hear first-hand knowledge on EL Haynes, the lottery process, and their likes and dislikes with the school. Thanks.

I agree with you.. Some folks have entirely too much time on their hands...

Indeed...

Apparently the lesson is "if you can't say something nice, then at least don't say something foolish."

This forum is becoming so full of self-rigteous, know-it-all, mean-spirited people that you cannot get a straight answer to a basic question. It is no wonder that our schools are full of obnoxious, unhappy, and mean kids...public or private.

Amen! OP, if you hear anything useful about Haynes, please post. My questions were about the schedule and year-round timing. It is different from other schools. What do people think? Actual parents at Haynes are encouraged to reply.

Yu Ying poster, nobody questions your right to say what you want. But it would appreciated if you did it somewhere else. Feel free to start your own thread. Any comments here are likely to erode whatever credibility you are hoping to build for the school.

Sorry, "it would BE appreciated".

Oh goody! More poster police please!

Not at all. It's a pretty peaceful little enclave, surrounded by a Marist (Catholic) retirement home, a Jesuit school, some other Catholic service buildings and Providence Hospital.

It's a beautiful building and a very serene environment. I only wish they could stay there, but it's really their incubator space. They'll outgrow it in 3 years and are looking for what will be the permanent location.

Haynes is in a neighborhood that is a bit on the dicey side - anyone who says anything different isn't being honest. The school is flanked by a liquor store and a strip club. There are a lot of drunks hanging about. That said, the people on the streets are very friendly, and nobody will bother you.

I am an EL Haynes parent.
The actual block is not the best, but I never feel unsafe.
I love the school, the teachers, and the schedule.
The year round schedule is amazing, because it allows for breaks at odd times of the year, which is really nice. Remember that during these breaks, there are actually optional "intercessions", which are really great. They pick a subject for a week, and study it with field trips and all.
These cost, but the fee is quite minimal. Ten, in the summer, the block of time that the kids are out of school is shorter than a "whole summer", and the time when school is out, and no intercessions are offered is minimal. Parents do the same thing they would for a regular public school, (camps, grandparents, college students) but for a shorter amount of time.

Hope that helps.

I am ACTUAL parent at Haynes as well. I agree with PP.

The school is wonderful. I have never seen my kid (preK) being more enthusiastic about anything.

I love the year round schedule. Between regular school days and intersessions they are open 47 out of 52 weeks. For Fall break we did one intersession about pets and took the second week off.

The school week schedule is as follows: Mon-Thursday 8:30 to 3:30, Friday 8:30-1:00. Before and aftercare is provided

The building is awesome and the staff is great. Most morning two out of three principals are out greeting the kids by name on the sidewalk.

They expose the kids to a wide variety of "specials". In Pre K this year they have PE, Dance, Spanish and Music once or more every week.

Their motto Be Kind, Work Hard, Get Smart is embraced at every level and addressed in curriculum etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions

PP here. I forgot to add that while they are a Pre-K to 6 school now the school is PreK-12. Huge bonus after going thru the trials and tribulations of getting my son a spot last year.

Good luck with your school search!

PP - I have applied and plan to attend the Open House. I would love for you to expand on the trials and tribulations of admissions. I understand that it is a lottery

The trials and tribulations were not specific to Haynes. It is indeed lottery based.

I was referring to the nerve wrecked process of visiting schoos, identifying the best OOB with the best chances of getting in , stewing over wait list numbers etc etc. My point was that with a PreK-12 program I will never have to go thru that again.

Hope that makes more sense
