Fat girl jogging

Congrats on getting started, that's awesome. Agree with others that you should repeat weeks on the program as necessary.

(From OP) Thank you all for the good advice and support!

Not only do I admire your determination but I also love your attitude. It would be fun to meet you in person and run together!

I'm 60lb overweight and a size 14/16 and had trouble finding shorts that didn't ride up and chafe. I started wearing some knee length pants that are like a combination of yoga pants and bike shorts. They are Champion brand from Target and have compression to hold you in like Spanx and a very high waist.
I find them much more comfortable than shorts b/c they prevent both thigh chaffing and tummy jiggle.

Good luck OP!

hey OP, just wanted to say congrats. If it makes you feel any better, I am not at all overweight, but I have never, ever been a runner. I'm restarting exercise after a couple years off and a couple kids and thought I'd try running at the old age of 42. Goddamm its kicking my ass. I cannot run anywhere close to 30 minutes yet either. So, its not just being overweight. Its also doing something new, and hard.

Hang in there.

So, I'm trying the Couch to 5k thing. It's kicking my ass and I'm only in week 1. I'll stick with it but it will take me longer than planned to get up to jogging for 30 minutes straight.

Has anyone else done Couch to 5k? If so how overweight were you?

Thanks!

Just stop stuffing your face.

(From OP) Wow! Awesome advice! I hadn't thought of that!

I usually carry a milkshake or a Camelback full of soda while I'm running to keep hydrated, but I'll stop now that you have let me know that too much food is a problem when you're fat.

Love it! Sending you good vibes OP!

Two words: body glide It helps immensely!

Get these. They are expensive, but are magic. I got one after I had my son so I could still run when I was nursing (I went from a normal D to an H).

OP good for you. You sound amazing. I admire your determination - and sense of humor. Good luck with your runs!

OP: you go! You inspire me!

I wish I could find a mom running group in Rockville. Only way I ever run is with others.

(From OP) I don't have huge boobs for my size, so I'm getting by with a Champion brand sports bra. I wish I could be more help.

Moving Comfort are the absolute best for this problem. I like the Fiona, personally, and have comfortably worn it for marathons. Still need some Body Glide in some places, though, or I chafe.

Congrats, and keep it up! I'm a long-time runner (racing since childhood, did cross-country, run on alternating days for most of my adulthood) and I am always psyched when newbie runners in my circle ask me for advice.

My advice for you:
* Make sure you wear really good shoes, especially as a heavier runner. (I'm 150 lbs so this applies to me too.) They will generally lose their supportiveness/cushioning faster than shoes for a lighter person, so replace them at the first sign of "kicked"-ness. I can typically take my shoes to 400 miles of running, plus sometimes more of walking.
* If something hurts - not soreness, but pain - dial it back for a few days and then pick it back up again slowly.
* Increase distance or speed, but not both at the same time or you can overdo it and get frustrated. By this I mean, if you are currently running a mile at a time at a 12-minute pace, first work on running 2 miles at a 12-minute pace or first work on running 1 mile at 11-minute pace. It generally gives you better results, I think.
* Remember to hydrate really well and if it's super hot outside, the treadmill can be your friend. (also, nice cool mornings like we've had lately are perfect for running, even if you don't think of yourself as a morning person.)
* If your butt muscles ache, find a foam roller at the gym and roll over it. It can hurt at first, but then feels amazing and I think it really helps.
* Don't combine a severe diet with running and expect to feel great while running. It'll affect your performance. Try to eat clean, and eat enough calories to fuel your running, including carbs. (right now your mileage is low enough that you don't need a ton of carbs, but carbs do fuel cardio so restricting them can make the cardio feel harder than it should.)
* Run different places so you don't get too bored. google "gmap pedometer" for a good site to make up running routes.

good luck!

OP, I LOVE YOU!!!

Fellow fat girl here. I'm 50 pounds less fat than I used to be, but I still have a long way to go. I was thinking about doing a C25K, too. I'd love to know how things are going and if you have any tips.

I hope you'll keep posting.

Wishing you lots of success!
