What's the "Gone Girl" for Summer 2013?

Same here. Preferred it to Gone Girl, actually, which I found a little too slick.

I found Gone Girl a compelling page-turner, but after I finished it, it seemed stupid in retrospect.

I'm the OP and I totally agree! But it was still hard to put down which is something I value in a beach read. Otherwise, those piƱa coladas get the priority status.

Thanks for the leads. Looks like I have a solid list to work off of!

OP, I have a recommendation with respect to the pina coladas. Mix coconut rum and pineapple juice instead of using the coconut cream. Same flavors, very tropical, less filling, fewer calories. Win-Win.

I love it! All these books and booze tips are getting me super excited for next weeks. Thanks everyone!

A Seattle architect & agoraphobic, who doesn't fit in with the other upper class Boho private school moms, disappears and her husband and teen daughter try to figure out what happened. Funny and hard to put down.

I liked this a lot!

Have you read Bossypants, by Tina Fey? I loved it. Bonus points if you can download the MP3 and just listen with earphones while throwing back rum drinks! (TF reads it, which adds to the funny.)

i just read Tell The Wolves I'm Home (which may be last summer's beach read) and enjoyed it. Especially good for mid-40 somethings who remember the mid 80s.

Into The Darkest Corner... a page-turner...suspenseful...disturbing.

I'd say no. It isn't a horrible or boring book but it never rose to good either.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who thought this book wasn't as good as the hype.

+1! I read online passages and they were enough to put me off it. Sample on Amazon online before buying. Caveat emptor!

Gillian Flynn's other two books were so much better Sharp Objects and Dark Places. They were so good and much better than Gone Girls.

Gone girl was so boring, I gave up after the first 40 pages.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It's been around awhile, but I finally got to it this spring. Amazing book!!! An incredible true story -- a well-written page turner wtih lots of depth.

+3--very enjoyable

I listened to the Gone Girl audiobook while on maternity leave. Maybe hearing it told in actor's voices changes the overall experience, but it seemed so boring and obvious to me.

I haven't read it yet, but I heard the author of My Education (Susan Choi) on Diane Rehm the other week and the book sounds fascinating.
