What's the "Gone Girl" for Summer 2013?

Pp, #1 being Burgess Boys

Great book, but not exactly beach reading (unless you like juggling a 1000 page book with your pina colada ).

Same here. Preferred it to Gone Girl, actually, which I found a little too slick.

I recently bought a bunch of Patricia Highsmith novels ("The Talented Mr, Ripley", and "Edith's Diary" are particularly good) and enjoyed them. They are unusual.

I found Gone Girl a compelling page-turner, but after I finished it, it seemed stupid in retrospect.

I'm the OP and I totally agree! But it was still hard to put down which is something I value in a beach read. Otherwise, those piña coladas get the priority status.

Thanks for the leads. Looks like I have a solid list to work off of!

I too found it a compelling page-turner. But I didn't think it was stupid in retrospect, although I did hate the ending. Really really hated it.

I tore through Yonahalsee riding camp for girls. perfect beach read and tons of sexy sex.

I'd say no. It isn't a horrible or boring book but it never rose to good either.

Also Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson.

About to start Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane (DH enjoyed it).

And I got my smutty historical fiction fix with Philippa Gregory's The White Princess, which was surprisingly entertaining. More in the mode of The Queen's Fool and The Other Boleyn Girl than her more recent, less good ones.

Yeah, I couldn't put the Burgess Boys down--it's not a thriller, per se, but definitely a page turner.

A Seattle architect & agoraphobic, who doesn't fit in with the other upper class Boho private school moms, disappears and her husband and teen daughter try to figure out what happened. Funny and hard to put down.

Blah. Everyone in it is so mean with no redeeming qualities. Just depressing.

I second Where'd you go Bernadette by Maria Semple. It's very funny, especially if you've ever lived in Seattle and/or send your child to a private school.

I know this may not fall into your interest category but World War Z was a quick and remarkably good read.

OP, I have a recommendation with respect to the pina coladas. Mix coconut rum and pineapple juice instead of using the coconut cream. Same flavors, very tropical, less filling, fewer calories. Win-Win.

Well size-wise I admit it's a little big, but I found it a very quick/plot driven read, which is what I'm looking for in beach reading.
