At what age did you get your kid a laptop?

I would rather have a desktop with large screen, real mouse and keyboard than a tiny thing that I'm probably not going to move around very much.

But then we have 1 computer in the house, 0 TVs and 0 smart phones (good old flip phones). And we're scientists and rather tech-savvy. Just do not feel the need for a whole of technology in the house.

Shocking!

Seriously? That's an old-fashioned thing... like everyone sharing one cell phone.

How old are your children? Once they get to MS and HS most of the homework is on the computer. Our DCs' do their homework at the same time, one computer would be problematic.

How old are your children? Mine are in HS and they need computers for their nightly homework.

Our youngest DC got his laptop in 6th grade. That way he could have his text to speach and word prediction software at school at and home on the same computer. SHocking! I know to have a child that actually needs a computer.

But seriously, kids need computer to access schoolwork and do homework these days. If you have more than one child and they do their homework at the same time, like my children, then you need more than one computer. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

5th grade. Older posters, things are really changing. Schools want them to post their homework online.

I love our desktops!! I can't imagine being limited to laptops only. Our kids always used the desktops & then moved to a personal laptop in college.

My oldest will enter 3rd grade, so does not need a computer - I was responding particularly to the "shocked at how many of you actually still have desktops" post, as well as 7 year olds being offered computers. I do not think anyone would dispute the need for a homework computers. Are you always this agressive?

Ds got a laptop this past summer for his 8th birthday. He had to choose between a laptop or a party, and chose a laptop. It's in great shape, 2nd hand from Craigslist.

I was responding to your tone. (eg, Shocking! and humble brag about not needing technology was particularly offputting)

For those who did get laptops for their middle schoolers, did you mostly opt for Macs? Any experience with the new Samsung Google Chrome?

We went with Dell. Macs don't work well with Blackboard.
