To OP: What was the situation when you were copying it, and how did anyone else see it?

Yes, if you walk into a bookstore and start scanning pages, they will kick you out. BUt if borrow a book from a library, scan it for your own use, and then return it, no copyright holder in their right mind would give two craps. (And I say this as a person who is generally annoyed with piracy, copyright infringement, etc)
