Now if you are doing it to give translated copies to all your neighbors-- then you have a problem.

I am a copyright lawyer, and this is the correct answer. The people who say all personal use is fair use are absolutely wrong. Even if you're not selling it, you don't have the right to copy, reproduce, sell, give away, etc. copyrighted material except in very limited circumstances. That said, the copyright owner is unlikely to do anything about this even if this guy contacts them.

What is this?

There are many specialties in the world of law. Copyright attorney is one of them.

My friends son has a medical condition and the only published book about it in "easy to read" non medical language is in English. She doesn't read English so I bought the book and wanted to translate it for her.

Using a doc version and throw chunks at a time on google translate and correct the mistakes would be much much easier than having the book on my lap and translating word by word in a note pad.

Thanks to all for your responses.

New poster here. Aroundtheblock, I hate answers like this. We all know Google exists. Why bother posting something like that? Why not be helpful? Moreover, Googling something like "copyright lawyer" does not always provide information. It provides advertisements and responses that could confuse someone who doesn't speak English well.

That's why you type in "What does a copyright lawyer do" and get links like this: http://www.networklocal.net/lawyers/baker_rannells_lawyers/view_article/130

I'm the poster who said I'm a copyright lawyer. Copyright lawyers help people protect and enforce their copyrights or help parties who have been accused of copyright infringement or sued for copyright infringement.

Anonymous wrote:Yeah, but what about if the guy doesn't go to the copyright publisher, and instead goes to the cops or INS. The guy sounds unhinged enough to drag immigration into it, even if there is no cause, just to further harass the OP.

Yes I'm sure if you call 911 and say "I SAW A COWORKER TRANSLATING A BOOK FOR PERSONAL USE!" they'll send over the SWAT team right away. Same with INS. I'm sure they have nothing better to do than get involved in issues that are completely outside the scope of their work.

Thanks PP. I do my best. One of the reasons I went to nursing school was to help people heal. I wish I could do more for them.

OP You can also contact the copyright owner, go through the publisher, and ask for permission. I work for a large publisher and do this all the time

PP here. You are doing what you can, which is the most you can do--people never forget those who were there for them during a medical crisis. At least, I haven't.
