wedding dress

6k, parents paid. I provided lower options but they liked that one best and so did I.

I'm getting married next March and just bought my dress for $1200. I am very hourglass shaped and had to order up a size, so I will need the waist taken in. Can anyone recommend a good tailor in DC or close in suburbs?

I bought a floor sample for $200 from a bridal boutique that was going out of business. The retail price was $1300.

Only $210 and now I'm so glad. I haven't even looked at it in over 2 years since I got it cleaned.

$700. I had it custom made by a seamstress in Greece based on a Christos dress I love that was over $5000. It was absolutely beautiful but I have not looked at it once since shoving it in the garment bag the day after my wedding so I'm glad I spent "only" $700.

~$3k for designer sample

$100 plus about $100 for some changes made by a seamstress. Almost 16 years ago.

300. From Nordstrom. Alterations were another 100

Public Service Announcement!

If you have a wedding dress made, you must have 4 layers in the bodice, not two.

Layer one, outer layer (be it lace, silk or whatever)

Layer two, inner lining. Best if it is a heavier layer of quality fabric, such as a dull silk or silk blend duchesse satin.

Layer three, underlining. Usually a nice 100% cotton fabric with a crispness to it. Layers two and three are placed together, and then sewn together at each seam throughout the bodice, in vertical channels that house the boning.

Layer four, lining. The best fabric is silk organdy.

It sounds like a lot, but that is the only way to make a well constructed wedding dress that will hold all the weight of the trim and the skirt while still maintaining the shape of the bodice through the long wdding celebration.. It sounds hot, but by using natural fibers (except for any lace) it will maintain breathability far better than a synthetic dress of just 2 layers.

Reviving this thread because I've been watching re-runs of Say Yes to the Dress lately and I can never get over the fact that several thousand dollars seems to be the rock-bottom budget for these brides. Do people really pay this kind of money in the real world? Or is this just unique to the kind of folks that can shop at Kleinfeld's?

FWIW, bought my dress on sale for $600 at David's Bridal, and even though I could afford that it still pained me to spend so much. Bought my veil for $30 off CL, then resold it for the same on CL.

$1200 I think in 2011. It was one of the least expensive I could find that didn't feel like cheap material.

$200 plus alterations. Filene's Basement.
