Parents would send their kids there, especially if it's in boundary only.
We are fed up -- we are on our second charter and very disappointed. We are leaving to VA and so are several families. As for Wilson, it is extremely overcrowded. A head one teacher tell someone in the metro that he did not even know his students' names even now in May ... |

| Ok - see putting a charter there does nothing for the families (our family included) going to neighborhood elementary schools there. We need a MS option that is in our neighborhood that we can count on. I know all the charter families look at every closed, recently closed, or not even closed but not totally used DCPS building and expect it to go to them, but some of us who go to DCPS neighborhood also have an interest in these buildings |

I would completely agree, except that DCPS is once again doing nothing. The options no longer seem to be a DCPS middle school or a charter. They are letting an empty building rot or use it as a charter. So let's go ahead and turn it over to someone who would actually use it. |
Agree. Since the decision has been made not to move forward with this site as a DCPS school in the immediate future, why not at least offer it up as possible 5- or 10-year lease option to a charter school. See what bids come in -- and then decide. Makes no sense not to recoup some money from a potential lease and in the meantime, offer a few hundred DC school children a better learning environment than they have today. |
Or at least open up part of the grounds for a playground or sports field something...such a waste of resources. |
This option may create a problem as well. Let's say after the lease, DCPS wants the building back. Where will the kids go? Yet again a Charter school will be looking for space and DCPS will be the bad guys. |

Agreed. It's sad to see some charters with no playground or gym and basement classrooms, while this campus in the middle of the city lies vacant. |
| If it was given to a charter for a 5 or 10-year lease, there would be issues around how the build-out is financed and a significant portion of the cost would likely need to be borne by DCPS (the landlord) - the long-term lease is needed to secure the construction loan that allows charters to do gut rehabs on old DCPS buildings (or other buildings...). |
The law was changed a couple of years ago that the city has to offer charters a 25-year term with a 25-year renewal option on former DCPS properties. |
Well, since according to twitter, the city left the windows open to have the rain pour into the building - it says what they think of the building, mid-city and the people who would send their kids there. Give it to charters, the city doesn't care anyway. |

Close some of these "mediocre" Charters (Democracy Prep, Lighthouse etc.) and there will be some inventory.
