What age did you stop using a carseat

Ugh I can't wait for this day.

Whenever they're mature enough to sit correctly in a seatbelt without fidgeting and whenever said seatbelt hits them in the right places on their body. A badly-fitted seatbelt can actually kill or severely damage organs, esp. if it's fitted over the belly and not the hips/thighs. I would guess 10-12 for a nuerotypical child?

Isn't the law 8 in most nearby states? They have to be at least in a low booster until 8?

5. We switched to a highback booster (Graco).

Minimum is 4 and 40 pounds, booster seats often have height/weight minimums on them. Your child has to be able to sit properly for the full extent of the car trip.

For moving out of a booster, the seatbelt should fit properly without one.

Minimum weight for a high back booster is 30 lbs.

My son is a larger five, well over 40 pounds, but he's still in the limit for his harness seat, so we will continue to use it. Partially because I'm cheap - I spent a gazillion dollars on this Britax, so why would I go buy a new one? That being said, if you're giving him a ride, I have no concerns about him sitting in a booster with seatbelt. He's done it.

The law in DC, VA, & MD requires kids up to the age of 8 to be in an appropriate child restraints (slight variation among states). While state laws tell you what to do, they are best regarded as a minimum. Best practices dictate that your child should remain in a car seat (most likely a booster) until they can sit in the vehicle seat with the vehicle seat belt properly fit and the child remaining in position for the entire ride.

While 8 is the magic "legal" age for children to be restrained solely by the vehicle seat belt, checking the fit of your child in the seat belt in the vehicle is much more important at 8. Carseat laws say what they will; the laws of physics apply in every state and jurisdiction.

I'm quite surprised that in a group of highly educated middle to upper class parents that there is such a large group poking fun at those who take this so seriously.
Car accidents are the number 1 killer of our children. Let's poke fun at that, but freak over boys with stick toys.

So true.

keep in mind too that it is more a matter of weight and height than it is age. If a child is older but on the small side then a seatbelt will not fit them properly and thus they may need a booster for longer.

While this may be the stated parameters of some HBB, a booster would never be the best practice for a 30 pound child. Never.

Agreed. Kid should still be rear-facing at that size, no matter how old.
