What school is this? |

It's no wonder so many children aren't ready to be adults nowadays. They aren't being challenged as much as they could be.
PreK is NOT hard, esp in DC. Have you looked at the curriculum? DD is a smart girl, but she's not a genius and she's bored by the curriculum in PreK3 because its stuff she learned in daycare a year ago. Fortunately, she's learning Spanish too so she's being challenged 50% of the time. And she's a late bday kid. I would have LOVED for her to attend Stokes this year. If she were guaranteed admission there next year in exchange for repeating PreK3, I would be doing her a disservice. She's one of the smallest kids in her class and not the most mature, but she's adapting and has just adjusted just fine. Being the youngest kid has some advantages too. For instance, she stopped having potty accidents completely once school started. OP, K is another great entry year at some charters. And at Stokes, PreK4 is easier to get in than PreK3 (which hasnt had a lottery for this grade in two years). |
| Speak for yourself, PP. PS3 was a steep learning curve for my December birthday son. |
| My kids are also smart but not geniuses. None of the three of them have ever talked about being bored at school, ever. I have twins in preK and an older child. The twins' teachers both told me that my kids basically know all the academics already that they need to enter K. But they aren't bored. Their teachers find ways to challenge them. I really wonder whether parents are telling their kids that they (the kids) are bored, and this is a disservice to your child - the messgae that they are so smart that school is boring. |
| Red shirting should be illegal especially in the public schools. |
I smell Yu Ying. |
yes, we got spots at numerous charters and our JKLM public for our September birthday child (who we held back). The principals seem to be very lenient about September birthdays because Montgomery County and all the city private schools follow the Sept. 1st cut-off. |
| My son is in Pre-K right now at a DCPS and we plan on having him repeat Pre-K next year at the same school. He is a September birthday. |
So wait, if you are smart - you can't skip a grade, but lets reward the not-smart kids and let them stay behind? I'm not sure I get that policy. No wonder I wouldn't be caught dead sending my kid to DCPS. |
| DCPS does skip kids but it's rare. |
Could be, but from what what I can tell there a lots of September birthday kids who come in on time and do well. Starting older and later is not an advantage with immersion and the only people who do this are the ones who could not get in the first time. |
