Derail conversations by focusing on semantics. Why do this?

I can relate to all ofthis, I hate it! Plus English is not my first language but it is the ONLY language my husband speaks. My English is pretty good, but he does take pride in correcting me, pretending he does not understand etc. And when I ask him to clarify something that has nothing to do with semantics, he turns it into semantics too. He gets irritated and unbearable. Marriage is dead. I try not to speak to him because he is always so grumpy and unbearable.
