Memo to my former nail salon and to my former hair salon: It's 2012. Time to accept credit cards.

Why?

Oh never mind. Carry on.

Just because you pay by credit doesn't mean you have DEBT.

We charge everything on our cards because of the benefits we get (frequent flier points, etc) and we pay it off every month. So thanks for your presumptuousness...

Just the next block down on the same side of Old Georgetown. Heading away from downtown Bethesda, in the old Acqua Nails location. Called Nails by Tammy, maybe?

(Tammy's also have a much more up-tp-date color selection.)

I didn't realize they were run separately. That's weird.

Yup. People who use debit instead of credit and forgo points are straight up stupid.

Why don't you all make it a point to visit your own bank once a month and get some cash out for your weekly manicures/pedicures. Or you can join a bank that charges no fees, at any ATM and reimburses you for fees charged by other banks.
Third option is to do your manicure at home.

Why should I visit my bank nice a month? I much prefer the strictly online relationship we have now.

As if all of you are paying off your bills at the end of the month. Uh huh.

Also i don't think a lot of people realize how expensive it really is for businesses to take credit cards. They pay a per swipe fee....so you spend $100, they pay 4% to visa, plus another fee to their bank, then you forgot you wanted gum so you swipe you card for .99 cents, when the fee is $1 just for you to swipe your card so now they lost a penny, then you realize you got xx product by mistake (your mistake not theirs) so you return it and they have to pay 4% again o,us the fee to their bank. Seriously people, you're killing small businesses when you use a card instead of cash. Big businesses can absorb that cost because they buy product in larger quanities and get better prices as a result. Small busineses can't compete with that so you go to the cheaper chain store and main street goes out of business.

Exactly.

If I knew then what I know now about merchant services, I would have thought twice before offering it for my small business.

I certainly don't want to "kill" small businesses, but I haven't gotten paid in cash since I was a teenager. I don't carry cash because I don't need it for most of my purchases, even those at local "small" businesses. It's not convenient. If there is only one place that I still frequent that requires cash, I'm probably going to stop going to that place, because chances are, I'll forget to get cash beforehand and be forced to use the expensive and shady ATM. I would rather the salon (or whatever) charged me two or three dollars extra than for me to have to use the ATM, because then at least the business is getting my money and not the bank/ATM. I am happy to pay for the convenience of using a credit/debit card.

Don't know what kind of business you have, but it might very well have cost you customers. I don't go anywhere that requires cash only--and I pretty much laugh at them when they tell me they take checks. Uhm, ok...I don't use checks. All checks are mailed from my bank (USAA) directly, I don't write anything out. I don't have a bricks-and-mortar bank. If I can't use a debit/credit card, I'm switching. And I know I'm not the only one. Plenty of places have a minimum charge, which is fine with me.

NP here. yep, we have several CC, and pay them off each month and never carry over a balance. Given the others on this thread who have said the same thing, I'm guessing there are more of us out there that do this than you would think.

Can I get a more specific location on Nails by Tammy? Where on Old Georgetown - I'm thinking it's somewhere nearish to St. Elmos? We just moved to Bethesda and I need a clean nail place. (Got an infection from a pedicure cut once and am a bit particular now.)

I can't speak for everyone, but we absolutely pay off every single credit card bill that we get every month and never carry a balance. Love getting my miles!
