Wait, are you telling me poverty is contagious t now too?! I thought it was just homosexuality. I am not the PP you are referring to, but my home is not "surrounded by poor neighborhoods." Our kids attend a Focus school. My home is in an affluent neighborhood, near other affluent neighborhoods, but also near some apartment buildings housing lower income people. Their housing is higher density than our housing, so lots of kids come from a small area of a few blocks. The majority of the area, space wise, is made up of colonials and cape cods filled with government lawyers and non-profit types. |
Hey all you Silver Spring 20901ers - do you mind posting your school? Thanks! |
I am 15:43. The school is Highland View ES. |
OK, thanks for sharing, I hope you feel better about yourself now ![]() |
8:59 here, Affluent outer ring with apartments in the center. If you drove through the area you would not consider it a bad area but as a pp said apts are high density and they send a ton of kids to the school. Plus some of the SFH send their kids to private schools. The majority of my neighborhood does. My neighborhood is ~600 to 1M but some of the surrounding neighborhoods feeding to the same school are at least $1.5M.
Also, Where I live the boundary lines for schools has very little to do with neighborhoods. The lines are redrawn all the time so you might be in a 40% school today and a 5% tomorrow. |

I live in a Title 1 school district. I love my house, but I'm not going to go into a tizzy about pockets of affluence, ring's of poverty or whatever. If you live in Title 1 and you're happy, own it and move on. Otherwise it just sounds like you're seeking validation. |
Kindergarten last year at Bethesda ES - 25 students, with 2 classroom aides.
1st grade this year at Bethesda ES - 27 students, with 1 classroom aide (may change). |
We have 26 in our Olney K, and I believe there's 25 in the other class |

Ashburton ES, Bethesda. 26 in K, no classroom aide. Why does Bethesda ES get classroom aides? I'm feeling pretty bitter about the huge class size in a supposedly sought after area. |
I don't know why the K in Bethesda gets an classroom aide, but I have to tell you that some students have an IEP and the aides are to help those students. My child is in a class of 17 with a classroom aide (but I didn't mention the aide, because this aid is specifically for 2 students who have physical disabilities.) And the reason I know that the aide is to help these 2 students, is because my child is one of those students! I don't think other families would know that is the case. In fact there may be other children in the class who have IEP's but I wouldn't know that either. I only know about the other student because we know the family and the student. |
The reason that Bethesda and other affluent areas have larger Kindergarten classes is because 95% of the students come from wealthy homes and speak English and are able to help their children In my area of the county 50% of the students are ESOL and 50% are on free and reduced meals. So these students don't come to Kindergarten with all the benefits of those who live in affluent areas and families. I'm not sure why you are so bitter. If you want smaller class sizes, move to my neighborhood in Silver Spring. It is cheaper, we have great ethnic restaurants and lots of diversity. |
