Obama- rude!!

Good lord, Op. There is a war, record deficits, dependence on foreign oil, to name just a few MAJOR issues facing this country . . . and you're worried about the use of a VERY common expression as a "hit" on a candidate for public office?
Please, focus your priorities here.

Rich's rule: If you say "Put lipstick on a pig, she's still a pig", you're talking about a woman. If you say "Put lipstick on a pig, he's still a pig", you're talking about a cop. If you say "Put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig", you're talking about something else.

BTW, please don't attack me as a cop-hater, nothing could be farther from the truth. I'm a big fan of the police nowadays, but the language of one's youth does not evaporate.

Excellent! LOL!

Fact is it doesn't matter what I think (that the expression came to mind because of Palin's prior comparison, but was not directed AT her), what you think, what Jeff or Rich thinks - what matters is that this kept BA off message all day. That is why I posted earlier that I am sure BA wishes he could take the words back, no matter the intent.

I think Obama really owes an apology to all our hardworking female police officers out there!!!

Not to mention apologizing to pigs ideologically or morally opposed to lipstick!

Will Jeff get upset if I say he must be in hog heaven with all the traffic on the Political Discussion boards lately. I'm not quite sure if it equals the emotions of the red-shirting kindergarten debate or the March madness as I call it with pre-school admissions but it is pretty darn close.

Thank goodness the talented Farce Thread ladies also enjoy their politics!

Comments on this board aside, this whole "controversy" just makes me so effing MAD.

How stupid is the communications director for McCain for creating this fake issue? How stupid are some people (like a woman for Hillary--who I heard over NPR today--who's now voting for the Reps and who thinks Obama is sexist) who actually are buying into this????!!!

Gaaaaaaaaah.

I find it absolutely hilarious that the GOP is all of a sudden so SENSITIVE to the slightest hint of sexism.

But really they just look like ignorant dopes for making a stink over this -- this is an old folksy witticism, Ann Richards was known for saying it. I think they know it's not sexist but they are trying to make the ignorant dopes think it is. So it's really just an appeal to their consituency (ignorant dopes).

Jeff, you owe McCain an apology!

I am pro-McCain and my initial reaction upon reading the quote was that the "outrage" coming from McCain camp was silly and it annoyed me. It seemed clear from the context Obama was referring to policy.

That said, when I head the quote on TV tonight, while I still thought Obama was referring to policy and not Palin the immediate audience reaction to the word "lipstick" made me believe *they* had misinterpreted it as well. So it wasn't sexist but it was a "gaffe."

I felt the same way -- as a neutral observer -- about the Hillary comment about RFK's assasination -- innocent and completely spun, but not the smartest thing to say.

When McCain used the expression he interestingly prefaced it by saying he hated the expression. I've never thought of it as being a problematic expression but it seems that it is.

There were a lot of people in the audience who thought Obama was giving Hillary Clinton the finger when he scratched his nose in a certain way. This is equally absurd. Obama's audience is not his fault. Anyone intelligent knows he was not giving Hillary the finger, and he was not going after Sarah Palin yesterday.
