The shooter killed one teacher and wounded two students and another teacher. The armed teenager was apprehended by the restaurant owner, who grabbed his own shotgun from his office and went after the shooter. Staring into the owner's shotgun, the teen dropped his gun and surrendered.

Pearl, Mississippi. A 16-year-old sophomore entered Pearl High with a hunting rifle under his overcoat. He opened fire, killing two students and wounding seven. The assistant principal, Joel Myrick, ran to his truck and retrieved the .45 automatic he kept there. Running back, he spotted the shooter in the parking lot. Ordering the teen to stop, the vice principal put his gun to the shooter's neck and held him until police arrived.

Grundy, Virginia. At Appalachian Law School, a disgruntled student on the verge of his second suspension entered a school building and shot and killed the dean and a professor. He then shot four students, killing one. Hearing the shots fired, two students, Michael Gross and Tracy Bridges, ran to their cars to retrieve their guns. With guns aimed at the shooter, Bridges ordered him to drop his weapon. When the shooter turned and saw Bridges' gun, he laid down his weapon and put his hands in the air

Nice, but multiple people were still killed.

But many lives were saved.

She was super brave and clear-headed. Maybe somebody can find the link. I remember being so impressed with her

Is this the story of a woman whose husband had just died and they were breaking in because they had heard via the news that he (the husband) left behind valuables or something like that? She put down her crying baby and shot the intruder as he entered. Right? It was such a horrible story, but I was so impressed with how calm she was throughout the entire ordeal.

That does not avoid the fact that these mass murderers had easy access to guns. If proper gun control had been in place, there is a high likelihood that these killings would not have taken place. People were still killed... all based on our lack of gun control in this country. It's sad that people have to own guns to protect themselves against the lax gun laws. Fucking stupid.

We've never kept a gun in our home, except for an antique unloaded rifle. I would never want to own a gun, but I'm curious as to how you think we should keep guns out of the hands of thugs and high school gangs who have fights and rob helpless victims in their neigborhoods.

All these "guns save" stories start with the bad guys having guns in the first place. Duh.

My great grandmother shot a bear that she believed was about to attack her.

Hmmm I guess when there Is a mass shooting a police officer sometimes kills the killer to prevent him from killing more...

9:36 PP here: on 8/7 my friend posted: Today, my friend was approached and eventually grabbed from behind by a man who was posing as a police officer. SHE was able to reach for her purse which contained her hand gun, and told the man that he didn't want to do that letting him know she had a gun.. She's lucky, and all because she has her Concealed Weapons Permit and a hand gun, think about it..Tysons Corner area @ 4pm today. She called the MD state police whom, for whom he showed a badge and was posing as..They said no plain clothes cop was assigned there and to call 9-11. (this was off of Tyco road down by the toll rd off route 7)

The fear that the homeowner may have a gun surely prevents some people from breaking into homes, which surely saves lives. This wouldn't be a news story: Area Man Considers Breaking and Entering, in what Would Have Resulted in a Fatality When the Homeowner Came Home Early, But Area Man Decided Not to Because He Feared Getting Shot Himself."

I would love to see some research on domestic violence killing rates in states with gun laws vs states without gun laws

Ever occur to anyone that there is a major breakdown in the fabric of families? Particularly a near complete absence of responsible fathers?

You do realize that DC is located right next to Virginia and Maryland, right?

Why do you assume that the guns are actually obtained in DC?

Perhaps that is why we need a COMPREHENSIVE gun control policy that makes it a little harder than - say - crossing 5 minutes over to Virginia to get a gun...

I scared off an intruder that attacked me in the middle of the night.

Oh, wait, that was with my bare hands.
