Is anyone in your family in jail?

Anonymous
I spent a weekend in jail for DWI about ten years ago

it was very boring from what I remember

we were released at midnight -- it was my birthday and my sister came to meet me at the jail; we walked home (fairfax city)

no one else knows and I actually have a TS clearance

Does she need the money or is it due to mental issues?

We rely upon AA to treat addiction in our country because it is free; however it's not for everyone-in particular anyone who isn't Christian or used to submitting themselves to some unseen force. It's popular because it is free.

Other countries like Canada and the Netherlands offers harm reduction models or medical models or treatment and I think these are ulltimately more successful. If a heroin addict is at home smoking pot legally- they are not doing that much harm.

Legalizing marijuana would go a long way in helping the prison population here.

Jail or prison?

My uncle is in prison for dealing drugs. Two of his sons (my cousins) have been in prison for dealing drugs. Another uncle went to prison because he killed a man in a bar fight.

Lots of drug/alcohol problems in my family. Several other family members have been to jail (not prison) for DUI, misdemeanor possession, etc.

Canada does have harm reduction but a lack of sufficient mental health services for children, youth and adults means that our prisons are still mental health facilities. I saw a study out of Illinois where they addressed youth mental health in an intensive way and their 5 year recidivism rate dropped from something like 65% to 15%. So many people with mental illness or mental health problems self medicate with substances to help them manage the emotional dysregulation and the racing or intrusive thoughts that can come with mental illness.

Pot in Canada is no big deal unless you are manufacturing or selling it.

My brother went to jail earlier this year for DWI. We were totally shocked. He isn't old enought to drink (I know, I know), and I had never seen him drink. Even so, if he did, I wouldn't have thought he would be dumb enough to drive too.

He also had a drug problem with pot and bath salts and crashed his new (used) car, stole my dad's car and drove it in a ditch, and just overall made me and my family terrified for his life.

He is clean now and in a different environment.

My brother-in-law is finishing up a 7 year term in Florida for selling drugs. It was a huge shocker when this happened-although looking back we were stupid not to see the red flags. It was so terrible and sad for our whole family when he went in. We should never judge others as I would have NEVER thought that someone I loved, in my family, would go to prison. Well, sure enough, it happened.

He had a good childhood - really nice SAHM who breastfed him, successful professional Dad, lovely siblings, private schools. I don't know what went wrong, but we definitely think about him when raising our children.

That made me laugh out loud. Sorry about your cousin though.

It was probably because he was sent to the hospital nursery as a newborn.

A lot of homeless people also have mental illness. Very sad.

OP here - I'm sorry for everyone's difficult situations but it does make me feel less alone to know that I'm not the only one who has a family member in jail. He is going to get out in about a week but he has serious mental health issues that need to be addressed. Because he is over 21 it's hard to make him do anything but maybe having experience jail will make him more cooperative about getting help.

Mental health issues. Absolutely not do to financial circumstances. Such an odd way for mental health issues to manifest; I've never dealt with this before.

My cousin is, for dealing heroin. I feel really sorry for him. My aunt had a ton of kids, they never had much money, and my uncle was never around. Plus my cousin has severe learning disabilities. He wanted to join the military when he was younger, but didn't make it in (he didn't graudate High School and couldn't pass the test to get his GED).
