Following up on my comment at 12:00, I commented at 12:05 that most people I know from countries in the middle east region refer to themselves by their country of origin vs "middle eastern". Just like most people I know from Europe refer to themselves as German or British or French, etc...

Well, then I guess you are learning the correct terminology (just don't ever call a jewish person or somebody from Iran an arab or middle eastern and you should be okay), and that if you are jewish or have a jewish last name, I would recommend not visiting an arab country or pakistan (I don't consider Pakistan to be arab, it's more like a muslim indian country)

I thought it was obvious that i knew the terminology by my joking that I double dog dared the PP to call a Persian an Arab? I then was making a comment that I felt illustrated that the Middle East is not one homogenous land but instead a term used for many culturally diverse countries.

Seriously, how did my comment at 12:05 make you possibly think I was in need of "learning the correct terminology".

There are no official geographical boundaries to the middle east (unless there are relatively new ones I am unaware of) like for europe or south america. It is a loose term. Some consider all of north africa to be the middle east - I do not.

Pakistan is most definitely not Arab.

Iran and Israel are in the Middle East by almost any definition. Individuals from those countries might object to be called Middle Eastern simply because Americans tend to consider everyone in the Middle East to be Arab Muslims (a polite American phrase for "terrorists"). But, I have met people from both countries who have described themselves as being from the Middle East or Middle Eastern. I have travelled to Arab countries with Jews and they have had no problem, despite their last names. I'm sorry to say that Mr. Weinstein would have been a potential target regardless of his surname or religion. He had the misfortune to be an American in Pakistan during a period of strong anti-Americanism.

If I was jewish, I would never go to an arab country period. end of story.
I'm not so sure the reverse is true (as I don't believe that Israel engages in this sort of behavior), but being that I am part arab myself, I would be hesitant to go to israel and at least ask around and think it through before going.

This is dumb. I know tons of Jewish people who visit the middle east all the time. Work there, go to school there, etc. Don't perpetuate the stereotypes.

If you're a US Citizen & Jewish and have just a modicum of common sense you understand that there is a risk you assume by traveling on business or pleasure to certain Muslim regions.
One would have to assume that being a UN employee Mr. Weinstein took an informed risk. Not like the accidental tourists in Iran and N.Korea.
The one thing about Pakistani's is that they are ruthless, as proven by Daniel Pearl, when it's clear the drones and prisoners aren't viable negotiating point the will either come to reality and take $'s as ransom or wave poor Mr. Weinstein's head for all to see what Allah's brave warriors have done.
When making the decision to visit a country like Pakistan one must always factor in to the equation that there is are powerful elements in the Paki government who support a brutal network of stone age animal terrorists acting in the name of Allah

do you really think checking a name on a drivers license or passport is always necessary to ascertain that somebody might be jewish? again, seriously?

GET Real we'll see Mr. Weinstein's head being waved about for all you PC ypes to comment on. We will not negotiate with these terrorists

I've spent more time that I would prefer to in Iraq,in Afgan and in Pakistan. On what do you base your frame of reference?
Provide me with examples that defy the stereotype.
These ISI backed elements supported the groups are ruthless terrorists. Who killed PM Buhtto, Danial Pearl, gave Bin Laden a safe house, prevents the delivering of supplies to our troops in Afgan. provides support and cover to the Haqqani network, and supported Mumbai attacks, etc... If you think this Jew friendly territory and I'm stereotyping you're just a tad naive and live in tge never never land of PC correctness
GET Real, we'll see Mr. Weinstein's head being waved about for you PC types to comment on
RE Paki I was on a mobile no offence intended to our "loyal allies"

The Lara Logan attack showed that anybody the Moslem mob wants to attack becomes a "Jew" to them

Yeah, like women shouldn't walk anywhere alone at night in case they get attacked and raped! And black kids shouldn't wear and hoodie and walk through a gated community after dark.
