| Don't. Do. It. Trust me. |
| I did it for a year...going in (as long as I left by 6:15am) wasn't that bad...coming home felt like little bits of my soul were being sucked out of me day after day after day. |
| Save youself and move in closer. I would choose a condo or town home before taking on that commute. |
| It's not bad if you can go in early and get off early. DH commutes to Crystal City. It's about 35-45 minute commute but he leaves there by 3pm. |

Looking to revive this thread yet again. I am looking at moving to Loudon County(Leesburg/Ashburn Area) in Summer of 2018 and am curious about what it looks like now that it is 2017. From what I have gathered,
the commuter bus from Leesburg looks like a good option, driving if I go in around 6 and leave by 3 looks good, biking 3 hours looks good if I only plan on working 4 hours, but does anyone know what it's like taking the metro in from as far out as possible? I understand that most people recommend living closer in but I'm willing to sacrifice a longer commute to have my large family in a more comfortable daily setting. |
| Commuter bus or drive to Silver line station and metro in (this would be my first choice). |
|
Loudoun Commuter bus to the Reston Metro.
Driving is insane. I thought I'd hate not having the control of driving myself, but I love it. I sit back with my travel mug of coffee and listen to a podcast or audio book and let someone else deal with the traffic and horrible drivers. I actually don't work in DC any longer; I'm working in Tysons, but still do the bus and metro. I can't imagine going back to making that drive every single miserable day. |
Right now the furthest metro stop is Weihle-Reston, so you still have a 10-13 mile drive from Ashburn to get to the metro, either taking 28 to toll road or greenway to toll road. My husband does that most days, probably 1:15 total (driving + parking +metro) each way Ashburn to/from Farragut West. Timing depends on how much traffic he hits on the toll road and 28. The Ashburn metro stop is scheduled to open in 2020, so that will dramatically cut back on the driving, and will hopefully be a less stressful and maybe slightly quicker trip. However, if your office isn't located off of the Silver Line, then you'll have to factor in more time for line transfers. The other big change is that 66 inside the beltway will be converted to a toll during rush hour (currently it's HOV only). So that will open up other commuting options, if you're willing to pay for them. However, if you're looking at Leesburg, make sure to factor in the cost of the Greenway as well. Rt 7 is awful during rush hour, so you'll want to take the Greenway, even though that's a bit spendy. If you're north of Leesburg, you could consider driving up to MD and taking the Marc train in....but I don't have any direct experience with that option. |
And it takes forever |
| Everyone I know who lives in Ashburn and works downtown takes the toll road and bitches about it. Like they didn't know before they moved. |
| I66 becoming HOT next month. Changes everything. Not sure how it will though |
Wouldn’t your “large family” aka non-working wife with lots of kids like to see you during the work week more than they need a big house? My husband has dinner with us at 6 every night because of his reasonable commute. |
| Everything is relative to your own unique situation. As a submarine officer I’m just happy to sleep in my own bed and not leave my wife and kids for months on end without communication. A long commute doesn’t sound so bad with the right perspective. To each their own. Thank you for all of the constructive feedback! |
| I live in Ashburn and commute to Merrifield. I leave at 7am and leave work at 4pm and it's 30 minutes each way. It's not bad at all... going to DC however, is way too far. |
Got to get a RealDoll then... |
