Op here - wow, it hadn't even dawned on me there would be such difficulties with the pronunciation. I'd only ever heard it in relation to the model Gemma Ward. Anybody know how popular it is ? From what I've read on the Internet it seems popular in England.

Gemma Ward is who I think of first. I knew 3 in the UK and I think it is quite common there. I know one 8 year old in Connecticut with the name and also knew one in college.

It has been very popular in England since the 1980s. It recently made it into the top 1000 in the US and is rising. Kristen Davis just named her daughter Gemma Rose so I'm sure that will help the popularity.

I had a great aunt gemma - Italian side of my family, so I always associated it as a more traditional Italian name. I think it is pretty, but old school. Full disclosure - Her sisters were named Rose, Bomina, Mary, Theresa, Angeline. Her brother was Natalie.

I loved that name, but now I associate it with one of the main characters in Sons of Anarchy, that FX show about a corrupt biker gang (the character is played by Katey Sagal, of Peg Bundy fame). Fortunately, I don't think the educated classes have the same taste in television as my husband...the "unwashed masses," perhaps.
