Tell me about your family-friendly neighborhood in Arlington

We are in Berkshire Oakwood and live it.
I'd start your search around the Lee Harrison shopping center. Look between George Mason to the East and Sycamore to the West, and a Williamsburg to the North and Washington to the South.

I don't live in S. Arlington, but there are really nice, friendly and slightly cheaper neighborhoods. Maybe someone can represent? The schools are still quite good in many cases. And I understand more diverse. I have a friend that lives close to Columbia Pike in a neighborhood with plenty of kids and she can walk to restaurants. Wish I could remember the name of the neighborhood! Parks unite a lot of neighborhoods. Check out the Arlington County website for parks and look at surrounding neighborhoods. Madison Manner has a big Halloween bonfire and other activities in the park.

And I should have mentioned that Madison Manner is in N. Arlington.

I am in Penrose (south arlington) and love it, I also like arlington heights- parks, good schools (although our highschool isnt the "best") tons of restaurants and quick access to the city via bus to pentagon city. but prices even down here are already going up very quickly

High View Park in 22207. Nice neighbors, diverse, more and more younger families, walkable and close to Ballston. Great schools- Glebe/Yorktown.

It is one of the smallest neighborhoods geographically in N Arlington and not touted enough for everything this neighborhood offers.

I'm happy to represent.

We live in Arlington Heights (22204) which is just south of Rte. 50. We absolutely love it. I just counted in my head and there ere are about 30 children just in our two block radius and all are between the ages of a few months and 12. There is a really strong sense of community. There are block parties in the summer and a Halloween parade/party every fall. Most of the children in the neighborhood go to Patrick Henry. There are some children that go to Key Immersion, Campbell, or Drew Model for Montessori, but most go to Henry. Another county-wide option for elementary school is ATS. Some neighbors also do Catholic school (St. Thomas More and St. Agnes). Our neighbor's with middle school aged children go to TJ and also to Gunston (for the Spanish Immersion). They all seem very happy.

We can walk to the library, Columbia Pike, the farmer's market, and Clarendon. William Jeffery's Tavern just opened on the Pike and it's really good. Cathal Armstrong is also opening up a 2nd location of Eamonn's on the Pike and Todd Thrasher of PX is opening a bar along with Cathal Armstrong. Next door to there the owners of Taqueria El Poblano are putting in a 3rd location. We are VERY excited. My husband and I also love Twisted Vines which is a wine bar as well as Bangkok 54.

Yesterday, I found out that our neighbors are (sadly) moving. Their house is going to be listed sometime this week. It's a great house and we would LOVE for another family to move in.

We live in 22205, right near the Westover shopping area and the East Falls Church metro You get a bit (just a bit) more for your money than in some other North Arlington neighborhoods, but we're still zoned for great schools (McKinley/Swanson/Yorktown) and it's a really warm, friendly, down-to-earth neighborhoods. You can get something small but livable in the $600K range, and if you can spend $800-900K, you can get something very nice and comfortable, with a good-sized yard.

We found a nice place this past summer - under $600K. It needs a little work - new bathrooms, for example - but it's a 4 bedroom, 2 bath 1940's cape that had already been expanded and improved. It's on a level 1/8th acre lot (which is actually a good size - it feels like a real yard but the maintenance doesn't kill me.) We're in Country Club, and we love the neighborhood. It is not walkable to metro, but there are buslines (which we actually use) and we can walk to Safeway, Harris Teeter, a couple of parks and a bunch of other useful stuff. We are very happy here. It's not for you if you want a newer house, though - the newer houses (from tear-downs) are $$$.

22:07 here- we're zoned for Nottingham/Williamsburg/ Yorktown and can walk to Yorktown. Lots of kids in the neighborhood and sidewalks on the through streets.

Look down the Washington Blvd corridor between Glebe and Lee--so Westover, Tara-Lee Heights, Lacey Woods etc. Close to the cute Westover shops (Lost Dog, Beer Garden, Lebanese Taverna), walkable parks (Lacey Forest), and newly constructed library (Westover). You can find some affordable homes in the 700-800k range (some lower--but small and need work). TONS of families.

As well, 22213 is a bit of a hidden gem (not a lot of people know about this zip). It has some options that could be of interest (one small street I know of has 30 kids), and good schools. It's in a bit of transitions (lots of new construction alongside potential tear down/smaller/older homes). Goodl uck!

Not sure why Falls Church poster didn't think Marshall is any good.

You sound like an idiot if you truly prefer Jeb Stuart or Falls Church High school to McLean high school or George Mason.

Not an issue of preference or affordability. It's about labeling other schools and, implicitly, those who live within their boundaries as not "good." Sad but characteristic of this status-obsessed area.

So what's your school pyramid?

In South Arlington, I'd recommend:
the areas off of 23rd street west of Crystal City (Aurora highlands)
the areas off of Arlington Ridge Road (but those are $$$)
the areas around Columbia Pike, George Mason, Route 50, and Washington Boulevard (Barcroft, Alcova Heights, Arlington Heights, Penrose)

Basically any SFH area that's free of litter and doesn't have a terribly high percentage of renters will be fine.
