that is starvation wages... I decided long ago, that in order to justify charging 20K a year(lol) the school had to offer a class size of no more than 10 kids...and that was assuming teachers made 60K....and had additional instructors... |
A significant portion of private tuition (about 10 percent) goes to pay for scholarships so that the schools can have some socioeconomic diversity. The cost of buildings, maintenance, administrative employees, specials teachers (art, drama, PE, foreign language) and so forth also drive up the tuition. A relatively small number of families have to cover the large fixed costs associated with any school. |
Something seems funny. I hear that the head of schools make $300K. Is that true? |
yes, full time. The parents' there think the tuition is high. I think it's around $1000/month. I would not teach in public school. But I am lucky that my husband makes much more money than i do. If the situation was different, you never know. I am sure that it is not awful, but I like my school. In my grad. classes, the public school teachers really complained about not being about to give students (my degree in pre-k to 4th grade) the attention they need. They learn so differently in that age group. Teachers complained about having to rush through curriculum. I had one lady in a class (she was much older) she said she remembered when teaching was fun and she could inspire students. If the class liked a particular topic over another they could spend more time on it and have fun with it. Not anymore. On the other hand, I have met public school teachers that were so creative with the curriculum and could still prepare them for the standardized tests. I just think it's rare, because it's draining. These were usually younger teachers and male. |
I think someone on this board posted that the Head of School at Beauvoir makes that. Perhaps at the most elite schools this is true, but I imagine that number is high for most independent schools. |
Do you work at a Catholic school? I am the OP and reallhy want to know if there is a big differnce b/w Catholic private schools and other private schools? |
No, Montessori. |
They are trying something new in NYC -- paying teachers $100,000 or so at certain schools. I wonder what kind of school (public or private) you could get if you paid teachers that much. |
100 k is high, but if you read the thread a while ago on pediatricians salaries, they'd drop their stethoscopes and sign up. No nights no weekends, more money. |
I am pretty sure that I have read that many DCPS teachers make over 100K. That is far more than my salary, not that I am begrudging the teachers...I could never do what they do! |
I could do it. |
Would you want to? Keeping in mind that most students are not as lovely as your own child, of course! |
