Our mechanic likes Hyundais. And you can't beat the five-year warranty.

Where is your mechanic? I dropped mine when he said they hate working on Hyundai's (I have a Santa Fe)...

They are super fun to drive, but my last one barely made it to 8 years/90,000 miles and it started slowly falling apart as soon as the warranty was up at 4/27,000. The interior buttons melted (like the radio dials) and the windows would go up and down at random. Had to replace the tie-rods every two years (never had to do that on a car before, so not my driving). Then the last night we owned it we went to open the door and the door handle came off in our hands. Had to climb in through the window. Other than a reasonable engine and a fun driving experience, everything else on those cars is cheap, cheap, cheap.

COMPLETELY agree about the Volkswagen. I loved my Jetta, but it had strange and expensive maintenance issues, such as the door paneling falling off and the car getting stuck in park. {No fix for that...had to take apart the gear shift every time I wanted to drive it}. It was a lot of fun to drive, handled great in winter, but I could have bought a BMW with all of the maintenance bills.

Another vote against Volkswagens. I will never buy another one.

I have a Santa Fe and love it. No problems so far and its 2 years old. One thing--I have some tall family members and they have a hard time fitting into it. So, if you drive with people outside of your DH and kids a lot, something to consider.

We looked at all of the cars on your list and next to the Santa Fe, we really liked the Ford Escape. May be worth a test drive.
