Can you recommend some kid friendly restaurants with nice ambiance?

Many restaurants at the National Harbor are kid friendly. It's just over the bridge from Alexandria.

I second the Clyde's recommendation. Good menu, they take reservations, and there is validated parking.

The kids have their own seating section enclosed with glass so you can still see them, but not sitting with you.

Matchbox in Chinatown is great. The waiters bring out pizza dough for the kids to play with - my 2 year old loves the place. Busboys and Poets in Mount Vernon Square has a great bunch and is pretty kid friendly. The service can be a bit slow, but they have gotten better.

Clydes in Chinatown is also great. The food menu isn't very diverse - you know what you're going to get. But it's made for kids and you'll get seated pretty quick.

Second Blue Duck Tavern for brunch--they have been lovely when we've taken our kids there. THey have crayons and pictures to color. And the food is wonderful, so the parents enjoy it, as well.

Jackson 20 in Old Town is fairly kid friendly. Second the Majestic recommendation, as well.
