I worked in a restaurant and silverware always went in handle down because it got cleaner that way, so that's what I do.

I saw a study a number of years back that said mixing the flatware - some up, some down - works best. Supposedly this is because there's less chance for the spoons to nest in other spoons, and the forks to nest in other forks, hiding the grunge.

OP, if this is what you are arguing with your MIL about, be grateful. Honestly, she sounds very helpful and well meaning. My MIL is depressed, looks for ways to nitpick and hates whomever is different, which makes everything impossible. It would never phase her to help. She would rather spend her time judging and making ti*t up. Kinda sucks. Seriously, your MIL might have OCD, but it could be MUCH worse. Try to enjoy her and her silly qualms.
