I Smell Like Placenta

To answer the question of why it is in my freezer- I was going to have it encapsulated, but then I changed my mind and I haven't decided what to do with it yet.

Excuse me? It's in your freezer? Is that sanitary? What if you lose power and it infects your Eggo waffles? This thread is getting more bizarre by the moment.

I am the person you are quoting. That is hilarious!

It's wrapped up pretty nicely, it's not just plopped in the freezer all in the open. If you looked in my freezer, you'd have no idea. You'd look right at the packaging and wouldn't think twice.

I haven't decided what to do with it yet and I'm not just going to throw it away. Companies are doing all sorts of things with placentas- making shampoo, beauty products, etc. Maybe I want to use mine for something that I haven't thought of yet.

I just don't get it. Have you ever mentioned to your friends that you have your placenta in the freezer? How long has it been in there? I am just so intrigued. My friends would be sufficiently horrified and would def discuss that I might need to be committed as soon as I left the room.

Did you know some people eat it? You can get it freeze-dried (like fruit!) and ground up into pills that women take like vitamins. I know nothing about the topic more than this, just from a friend who was reading a blog where a women did this, and claimed it helped her get through her PPD.

No, it's not really a topic that comes up. It's been in there a year. I only mentioned it now since we were on the subject of placentas. I could see some of my friends saying "ok dear, I am sure you have a good reason for it" and others wouldn't see it as a big deal because they probably have placentas in their freezers too.

NP here. There most certainly is a smell related to birth and amniotic fluid. Did every single one of you have the kiddo scrubbed before they were handed to you or something? Its a smell I will probably always remember since I associate it with the first time I met my babies. Quite a sweet smell.

Lochia, however, yuck. Did not like that smell at all.

To the pp who scrubs her vulva with a brush.. you should really stop that. Really.

I am one of the people that have no idea what smell you are talking about. I did not have either one of my children cleaned before I held them.

To the woman with the placenta in her freezer for a year. Either decide what you are going to do with it or toss it. It's not like things keep forever in the freezer. I wouldn't eat meat that was in there for a year. All your friends keep their placentas lying around too? This sounds absolutely bizarre....like an extreme form of hoarding.

What an unexpected gem of a thread this has turned into!

Other than placenta-freezer-woman I would love to have a drink with all of you. (Placenta woman might require me to have 3 or 4 vodka tonics beforehand, at which point I will be doing naked table dances and forget about what other exciting things might be lurking in her freezer. Just imagine the nanny pulling something out for dinner to defrost one night...)

And before you get all nutso: I am not preggo, even though I am on the expectant moms board.

Not uncommon. Simple internet search brought up....

I brought my sons's placenta home when he was born with the intention of burying it. He'll be two in a couple of weeks and it's still in the freezer!! Any other Mummys out there with placenta nestling amongst the fish fingers and frozen peas??! Out of interest what have others done with theirs??

Do any of you have a placenta in the freezer still? What's the longest you've ever kept one pp? What should we do with our placenta-in-the-freezer?

Can someone please tell me why a person would keep their baby's placenta in the fridge and then place it under a tree and plant it in the spring???

Planting the placenta is seen as a ritual for some families. You need to dig a deep hole, at least 16 inches deep and bury the placenta. You must wait a year before trying to plant a tree or anything over it because it will be too rich and actually kill the plant.

And of course, life would not be complete without a FB group called "I have a placenta in my freezer (seriously)!"

Maybe a bottle brush would work better?

Maybe the poster meant a loofah and not an actual brush. Or maybe she did mean like one of those small nail brushes. I guess I don't see the issue as long as she isn't ripping her skin off. Everyone doesn't desire the bare look. Why is that a problem?

Can I ask how you request the placenta? I had no interest in seeing it let alone bringing it home from the hospital- do they allow you to? It makes me think of a to-go bag from the hospital!

I had my wedding cake flowers in the freezer through 3 moves. The stupid caterer put the entire top in the box and sealed it, it was saran wrapped for a year and when we took it out I was shocked/horrified that they did that. Finally, I asked why I was keeping these freeze-dried shriveled flowers and tossed them.

Not sure how you'd dispose of a placenta.

Why would you ever want to bring home a placenta and why in the helll would anyone eat it? That's just taking it too far!

I used a round brush to scratch a yeast infection once.

Its just too much -- not good for the sensitive skin, hair or not. GYNs will even tell you that soap is bad down there, though of course many still choose to use it -- but soap and a scrub brush, my gosh.
