Independent school teachers salary survey!

It would be fun if, when you post your years experience, the grade you teach, and your salary, if you also paste the tuition (rounded to the nearest 5000 to hide the individual school) for the grade you teach

In my experience, this has not been entirely the case. Most parents behave with respect and civility. A small subset are extremely high maintenance and take up the vast majority of the administration and faculty's time and energy. My guess is this true in public schools, too.

Yes, it is certainly not all of the parents at all, but the vocal minority can make a teacher's life unpleasant and can sour them towards the overwhelmingly wealthy and somewhat entitled parent body of a school. Some of the attitude reflected by mothers on this forum can give you an idea of what teachers deal with. Also, I think part of the problem is that the tuition has become so ridiculously high at some of these schools that parents are crazed about having the perfect experience for their little darling...and meanwhile the teachers are still not making much money. This can create an environment of burnout out for the teachers. That is why there is a lot of turnover for classroom or homeroom teachers in particular as they have to field a lot of stuff beyond the actual instruction.

Those salaries are indeed all shockingly low. Definitely hope you all get tuition breaks for your kids!

I often wonder about the private school insistence on parent volunteering. You know how often we're hit up to organize the fair, the little parties, you name it. (Not that I think parents shouldn't be encouraged to be involved if they can-- but at our school it can feel like an overwhelming demand, with intense social pressure to volunteer, oten for events where 50 people who probably bill at $400 an hour in five hours....for events that net $5k!) I often wish the schools would offer an option: volunteer often v. just make a sizable extra donation and we'll leave you alone all year. I, for one, would gladly give an extra $2000, to be paid directly into a teacher salary fund, if the school would only leave me alone about sorting books for the damn bookfair.

So how’s it going at Landon’s Azalea Festival? Did it get off to a good start? Are they making money?

It depends on the school. NCS and Beauvoir NO tuition breaks at all!

Fabulous idea. Except that it needs to be sent to our Head of Schools and Advancement offices.

Wow. I love this idea!

The tuition breaks depend on the school. As for extra money, there are a few opporunities, but they are very, very low pay.

13 years experience, Masters, excellent refs from a variety of schools, 52,000 a year.

We do it because we love the kids and because we love our job. It would be very, very nice if our schools recognized our talent and paid us what we are worth.

Pay raises are low, only a tiny percentage every year. No opportunity to make more money unless you move into adminstration which is not the best option for many of us for many reasons.

Why aren't you paid more? Where does tuition money go? We are paying for the best teachers but our teachers arent getting paid!
