Independent school teachers salary survey!

Twelve years. 54k.

I think what would be much more interesting is a poll of administrators. I'd love to know how much more they make than I do.

Yes, pathetic. And private school parents are very high-maintenance for the teachers in many cases.

Extremely depressing. Do y'all at least get tuition breaks or at least first crack at financial aid? Does the school provide decent options to make some extra money during the summer months?

I hope that the teachers get a tuition break and admission preference, despite some of the snarking on this board. The teachers' children at our independent school are among the best students.

You can join this organization www.guidestar.org for free and find out what the top earners at your school make. The tax forms are usually several years old but it can give you an idea of salaries and benefits. Personally, I wish it posted everyones salary so we could see the disparity between faculty and admin, male and female.

In my experience, this has not been entirely the case. Most parents behave with respect and civility. A small subset are extremely high maintenance and take up the vast majority of the administration and faculty's time and energy. My guess is this true in public schools, too.

Kindergarten -- 3 years -- 30K. Any schools who pay more hiring?!

Are you all full time teachers???????

Seriously, how can anyone live on such paltry earnings? Are they provided free housing which would be worth an additional $10-20k per year and free tuition would bring them up to market wages. But, anything short of those additional comps it seems impossible that any family could survive on the wages posted on this board.

8:17 poster here

I left a great job and over 2x the salary to become a teacher. I love my job but was forced to ask my family to help me financially the past 3 years in order to survive in this area. Other young teachers at my school are in the same situation. And all of us have 2nd jobs

This was my post and yes this is for a full-time position. Like a PP noted, I also have a master's degree and was Phi Beta Kappa. My benefits are not very good either - nothing toward retirement, no tuition reimbursement, etc. I do love those kids though!

Admissions directors make much more than teachers at most independent schools. They usually get the whole summer off too. Once those admissions letters go out, they pretty much take the whole spring off as well.

I am so upset to find out the teacher's salaries are this low at schools where just one child's tuition seems to almost cover one teacher's salary! Where does all the money go?! Independent schools always say that tuition doesn't even cover costs. What are they spending all of that money on?

I'm curious, are these schools that charge $30,000+ or smaller independent schools?
