who cares what you think. most people HATE mid century ugly. |
If by "most people" you mean most people who end up in suburban ramblers or split levels around here whether they like them or not, then yes, you're probably right. I think most people buy them because they're relatively affordable-- since the aesthetic decisions that went into making them have fallen out of fashion. But I think it's best to be honest about your home's assets and limitations. I don't think it works to do up buildings with utilitarian architecture as if they can ever be traditional homes. I still say that if OP has a 1950s house, she should keep a healthy measure of original details. By the way, I don't think (restored) retro metal cabinets need to define what you probably think of as a mid-C kitchen. |
OP here-Thanks for all of the helpful posts. I think we are going to go with IKEA. We have one of those ranch houses the PP was talking about and well it just needs some updating

Good luck! I'm hiring my hubby out for consults

| I think if you do Ikea the key is to buy their higher end things. My ILs needed to do a kitchen update on the cheap and much of it came from Ikea. 2 years later, it looks a lot older and hasn't held up well (and they're not hard on a kitchen). They're upset because now when they sell in a couple of years, it's going to take more work. Really, cosmetically it looked good for the first six months and now there are some awful parts. |

"Most people" do not hate Mid-Century. I think you have the wrong idea about what a true mid-century house is. |
| Is anyone who used a contractor to install their Ikea cabinets willing to share the name? I like their cabinet choices, but don't have time to do the install. |
