If you have an IKEA kitchen what do you think?

We are in the process of renovating our kitchen. We are looking at getting our cabinets and counter tops at IKEA. If you have them what do you think? How have they held up? How was the install? Did you get your counter top from them as well?

Thanks!

We JUST finished an IKEA kitchen cabinet install. We did what our neighbor had done in her kitchen...at the urging of an interior designer friend of hers. My husband and our neighbor did the install in a couple days. We did not get the counters at IKEA - we found a better price at a granite place out near Dulles.

We did new cabinets, new countertops, new kitchen and new faucet for less than $4K. BEAT THAT! And it looks pretty amazing - all our neighbors who came by to see it the other night were asking my husband to help them do the same install in their kitchen. I think we've started a trend.

Considering the lowest price we got from a contractor who gave us an estimate for cabinets before was $11K, we're pretty darn happy.

Wow! That sounds awesome. I'm toying with idea of actually tackling the kitchen at some point. I've always liked the ikea kitchens. Your DH should hang out a shingle!

We didn't have a counter, but we had the cabinets and faucet. I liked them as far as sturdiness and appearance. However, if you compare 'features' like self-closing drawers and some of the stuff you can get with cabinets like Kraftmade, then they will seem cheaper. Of course, they are such a great deal that you can easily justify the lack of super-smooth drawer pulls.

oops, when it says "new kitchen" in my list, that should have read new sink. Sorry, I'm tired.

We put a small kitchen in our basement and a whole wall of cabinets nearby. Love them! Not sure what happened with pp's, but ours self-close and have held up beautifully in the past 4 years (and our kids beat on them daily). In fact, I would trade our custom and very high end cabinets in our kitchen for Ikea's any day!

We like ours. We got the solid wood doors, so it wasnt their cheapest. We spent like 6k in cabinets, doors, handles, etc. The drawers and doors self close. They have great organizers designed for their stuff. We bought the granite at a different place. I would choose the solid wood doors vs the veneer. The most expensive part is the labor to install them so it doesn't make sense to go cheap on the cabinets. Their corner lazy susane stuff is great.

Their customer service is great so I had no problem returning and exchanging a bunch of stuff we ordered extra. I came back because I misplaced some hardware and they gave me the loose pieces that I needed, no problem.

Their drawer organizers are perfect.

Consumer reports has very high rating for the cabinets specially the hardware.

Very happy with the kitchen. We got it installed by a professional so it wasn't particularly cheap, but for the price it is good quality.

The one thing I regret is the countertop - we got the IKEA wooden one and after two years it is falling apart. it was very cheap though...

I hate my IKEA cabinets, although I've been told that we have the cheapest version rather than the higher quality wood that one the pp's has. (The prior owner put them in). We have white cabinets, less than 3 years old, and there are a lot of stains and scratches that won't come off. They function okay, but not as well as the high end stuff.

We've had our IKEA cabinets for 5 years. Quality seems ok, drawers are smooth in closing. We got the countertop from a place around Sterling/Dulles.

The only thing I don't like are the metal handles we got from IKEA. They're sort of cheapy & rusty in some spots. I had more expensive metal handles for another home and they held up very well.

IKEA looks cheap.

We installed our IKEA cabinets over the summer and I think they look great and are very sturdy. Our old cabinets were metal with 70's bamboo styled doors so anything was an improvement. We are in a condo. If we had a nice house, I would probably want something a little nicer than IKEA.

I was the first poster to respond. We are in a tiny TH. I likely would NOT have picked IKEA for a gourmet showpiece type kitchen. But to make our house look a little nicer as we prepare to sell it? Heck yeah. I just wish we had done it sooner - the cabinets we had before were poor quality and falling apart. These look so much better and have better organization - we had a lot of wasted cabinet space before, especially in corners.

Anyway, go take a look and judge for yourself. I think they are likely best for TH or condo kitchens.

Wow. How large is your kitchen?
I have 50s era metal cabinets which are still v sturdy but ... old. Wondering if I should go the IKEA route...
