Cute, Newt

You can smoke pot until you graduate from college.
You can snort coke until graduation or until you are saved, whichever is later
You can drive drunk until you reach the senate.
Subordinates of a different gender ok up through junior member of the house or unless you find God afterward
Shoot acquaintance (nondueling) never
--hunting exemption: up to Vice President
Be Gay: Good up to and including Senate unless Republican (cannot be reversed by becoming saved or "cured")
Consorting with strippers, hookers and the like:no, but there is a fifteen year statute of limitations and a grandfather clause up until 1975.

No human is perfect, and hopefully we're all trying to be better each day. It would be great if each president could be flawless even before elected, but that's not reality. It just doesn't seem that it should be THAT difficult to refrain from bad behaviors while in office.

No human is perfect, but that does not mean that everyone is morally equal. I see no reason why, in a field of a dozen GOP candidates, we should pick someone cold enough to divorce a wife during cancer treatment. I get that he strayed and that happens. But to not see his wife through her ilness shows lack of compassion, commitment, and hell self-control. Those are character traits that are problematic in a leader. all he had to do was wait for the right time, but he couldn't do that.

"Average" person? Seems like many of them came from great wealth.

Interesting point, pp. I have always had mixed feelings as to whether we should care if politicians have affairs. I mean, I have contempt for Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and John Edwards (especially him because I supported his candidacy) but whether it makes a difference as to their ability to do their job is another question. And I should add that I do think it is significant when a politician claims to support "traditional" values and then has affairs. But you're right about Newt. It's not just a question of his morality. It shows a lack of self-control, which makes one wonder how he would handle himself as president.

I do think morals and behavior matter. It's that little saying that many of us teach our kids (or some version of): It's what you do when no one's looking that reveals your true character.

Wife#3 look out. It sounds like Newt will be screwing (for) America very soon.

I saw Newt and wife #3 at the ATM where I bank one Saturday. She is skinny, not thin, skinny, and he has a pot belly. Her hair had so much hair spray that it looked as though it was a blond helmet with a flip. He was a gentleman, however, and opened car door for her. She had a Chanel handbag ($1500.00 to $2000.00).

Think back, Newt was quiet during the Clinton-Lewinsky witch hunt and everyone wondered why and then we found out that his new squeeze sang in a church choir. Apparently, singing was her virtue as running around with a married man didn't bother her. There is no reason to have sympathy for Newt's 2nd wife because she was running around with Newt when he was married to wife #1, whom he told he wanted a divorce immediately after she had a mastectomy. Does anyone really think this guy has a snowball's chance in hell?
