question for a mormon

Believe me, one of the first questions I asked was about the magic underwear. Neither of them wore it, but they both owned it. Neither one of them judged me at all for drinking alcohol; one was a non-drinker for other reasons and the other one drank alcohol.

My brother and his wife are Baptist and they judge me for drinking alcohol. I judge them for being creationists who don't believe in Evolution, so it's all good.

I went to high school with a lot of Mormons (in Montana) and my understanding was that you got the magic underwear when you got married and you wore it all the time, even-or ESPECIALLY during sex. The idea being that you are only having sex to procreate and not for pleasure. Mormons, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

One thing that I've noticed about all Mormons that I've met is that they are extremely kind, nice people and have really great relationships with their families.

Especially among the sister wives.

And Jesus wasn't a Christian, he was a nice Jewish boy. It was his followers who went all new religion on everyone.

Totally false. Everything in the old testament has been disputed by historians. It depends on which historian you believe.

actually that was a typo. I meant to say "NEW" testament. big mistake, I realize. that said, much of the history in the Old testament is accurate too.

lastly, almost EVERY religion was started by someone who was in it for the money or the chicks. Christianity is one of the few that was not.

You do realize that christianity is just a mishmash of numerous pagan religions (and judiasm), right?

I have noticed this too, and I will add that the mainline LDS I've met are also very hardworking, successful, and unusually industrious. They are also often conventionally attractive. See Elizabeth Smart's whole family as an example of what I speak.

My props to them, said as respectful atheist.

It has been my experience as well. I have never met a nicer group of ppl as a whole. I think the hardworking thing is one of the major values of the religion. They have a remarkable ability to take care of their own. You will never find a mormon who is in need, as they have an unrivaled network of support.

The magic undies sound kooky, but clearly they are doing something right, as they truly seem to radiate happiness. Where can I get a pair of these undies? I could use an attitude adjustment myself!

Okay, whatever crazy. You do realize that the tv show Big Love is pretend, right?

I don't know anything about Big Love. I don't have premium TV channels, nor does this FTWM have the luxury of sitting around watching stupid shows.

I'm simply saying that ALL mormons I've come across have been very kind people with a positive attitude. I also read the sensational expose, Under the Banner of Heaven.

You are the crazy.

All of this applies to the mormons I know. I was under the impression that the women wore the special undergarments when they were engaged and in preparation for a temple wedding. At least, that's what one of my acquaintances did during her engagement. They were kind of like long johns. Also, the families I knew did not leave their house on Sundays other than to go to services or visit with other Mormon families. Tithing is required so there are plenty of financial resources for a ward to take care of mormon families in need.

the central belief of pagan religions and Judaism is that Christ is the son of god and resurrected from the dead? missed that in my studies of greek and roman mythology somehow .... obviously Constantine and the rest kept the existing holiday system, but the faith and attitude was completely different. St. Augustine and his City of God attitude was a big part of the decline of the West.

all of the facts in the book of mormon, however, have been proven to be false. the lost tribe of israel, the archaeology, etc. it is fantasy.

as for the miracles - the jesus miracles took place 2,000 years ago, so it is hard to know either way. Joseph Smith was 150 years ago and a convicted felon for fraud before he get started.

Not L. Ron. He really is a 3,000 year old Super-Thetan. And Jesus was bi, obviously.

Don't forget Muhammad the Thief and pedophile. Now he's got a bunch of Jesus looking polygamists finding new and creative ways to sever heads off live bodies for the glory of Islam and the promise of 40 virgins..

You don't need wood, you need a pair of magic under ware to untangle you vagina from the nasty knot it it tied up in.

Paganism isn't just the Greek and Roman gods, you know. Christianity cribs precepts and rituals from many pagan religions, including but not limited to the date of Christmas, the resurrection, baptism, and monotheism. The cult of Mithras was a particularly fertile ground for plagiarism. I know many Christians like to think that Christianity is entirely original, but it just isn’t so. You’d think someone who is so concerned with the “historical accuracy” of the New Testament would know that.

Aren't the miracles and the resurrection "the basic scenario," to believers? Without them, there's not much of a religion.

Smith didn't find the gold tablets. Mary didn't have a virgin pregnancy and Jesus didn't return to life. However, Jesus lived and so did Smith. Each is bits of history with huge doses of "faith," i.e., baseless belief in silly stuff.

Like others here, I've had great experiences with several mormons - model citizens, if not for the religiosity and the Republicanism.

obviously its easier to convert based on existing ideas. again, nothing new to anyone. hell, when I was in Peru they had the last supper on the wall of the cathedral - and instead of feasting on fish and loaves they had guinea pigs. easier to convert the incans to teach them something familiar. but again, not sure how that is relevant. if anything, it makes the historical accuracy even more easier to understand.

The main difference between Mormons and Christian faiths is that Mormons are polytheistic. They believe that this life is a proving groun d for would-be gods in training. Every good Mormon man can be god of his own planet some day. Pretty big difference if you ask me.

Different, yes. Weirder than any other religion? Nope. Sorry, but not one of them makes any sense to me because I was raised by atheists and I don't seem to be capable of accepting anything based on faith. I don't mean to be disrespectful- I'm just explaining how it all looks to a non-believer.
