Bishop says AZ hospital no longer 'Catholic'

But it seems to me your choices are to lobby for change from within, or stop giving them your support.

If you choose to practice in a Catholic hospital, or receive care there, you are again subjecting yourself to Catholic rules. There are other hospitals. Go there instead.

Natural Family Planning. Snort. That's probably how she got in this mess in the first place.

Ok, what you've said makes sense, BUT, articles I've read said she was too sick to be transferred. Putting aside this case for a second...what if you were rushed to a hospital in an ambulance? I guess this is just a good reminder to be careful what hospital you go to, because they may treat you with an agenda (that isn't medical in nature). Scary!

You are right about that higher authority dictating rules to you...read a piece in the New Yorker about the Vatican library and it wasn't so long ago (hundreds of years, but not thousands) that the church didn't want Catholics to read the bible! They wanted only the learned priests to be able to read the bible, so as not to have the unwashed masses making and interpreting the "rules" themselves. This is a deeply misogynistic culture.

This. Misogynistic treatment of others is not Christian and is not the right interpretation from God.

I totally agree.

How freaking hard is that? The Catholic Church's stance on abortion is unwavering and completely consistent - they don't kill babies. End of story. Are there cases, such as this one, where that seems ridiculously harsh, of course there are. But they can't just change their stance for the tough cases. Any more than a morally pro-choice abortion doctor could refuse to do an abortion for say, a nineteen weeks pregant woman who is wealthy and on her seventh abortion. I respect the right of pro-choice folks to be ok with an abortion under any circumstances, and I respect the right of the Catholic Church to refuse to fund or support any abortions, under any circumstances.

Yes, of course -- where everyone has access to multiple hospitals, multiple doctors, and the same quality of health care -- it's just that easy.

Do they teach these kind of values and anti-women attitudes at Catholic schools?

They certainly teach that abortion is murder. I don't think their anti-woman attitude is as obvious but when the highest position a woman can aspire to is nun, well, you don't need an explicit lesson to tell you that women are of little value and have little to contribute.
