| Google untreated ADHD and substance abuse while you're at it. Oh, and go back in time over at my house when my DC was having daily meltdowns doing his homework, and then come back and see him now, happy, self-confident, a successful student. Tell me I should throw it all away and sentence him to a childhood of agony and drug abuse because of myths parents of non-ADHD kids have about what is a medical disorder. |
| A very small minority of children do have ADHD (perhaps your child qualifies); but not 1/6 to 1/5 of children. There are more children in America needlessly medicated for a spurious condition than children with frank ADHD. Therefore chill out. Anyone with a teaspoon of brains should be able to figure this out. It's not rocket medicine! |
Let me guess? The latter regions have a higher density of neuropsychiatrists, pediatricians, psychologists, neurologists, and neurotic teachers, parents and children. ADHD is a billable diagnosis (supply-demand service). |

Could it also be the micromanaging of childhood? Flame throwers, puhhhhlease count to ten before flamimg. IMHO, though a very very small percentage of children actually have ADHD with no emotional contributing factors whatsoever like anxiety or depression, many are over-diagnosed .The medications do improve their test scores and this reiforces their use. Could it be that many of these children have simply WAY TOO MANY expectations for PERFECT success placed on them? Go ahead, flame me.... Let's cull DCUM forum to evaluate what parents post about most often as it reflects what they are asking themselves or hoping to get advice on. Hmmm...what are parents on this forum obsessed about: a WIPSI score of 99%, getting into the right "feeder pre-pre Pre-K,How to improve your child's peformance on the ERB, acceptance at Sidwell ,STA/NCS or Maret, "being on a competitive team for which they had to try out( and then drive hours to games, EVERY weekend)THAT is a tall order of expectations for a 3,4,5 or 8 year old to meet. And , low if they fail, they will soon be tested to find out "why a 4-5 stanine on the ERB??", because DC might not get into STA with that...horrors...Perhaps it is parents pulling connections to get DC into a private where academics are too hard for DC. Many are falsely diagnosed and medicated. Many adults even use ritalin to get through Med school and Law school because they state ,"it helps level the playing field" or "if everyone else is doing it and you don't , well you wont make the cut" . There are also parents prepping for the WIPPSI ( sp) or the ERB in NYC...just insane stuff that never went on in our country 40 years ago. Meanwhile our kids are obese, anxious, cutting themselves in HS and medicated on either ritalin or anti-depressants.
What are we gaining as a society and what are we losing. What used to be a rare condition is now the new normal in the DMV as the reaction of many posters on this thread shows. Something is not right here. |
| GAMING the system (e.g., PSAT/SAT prep, educational consultants, accommodations for tests and exams, year round sports camps and individualized coaching) while foolishly pretending and lying to others their special children don't get tutoring, don't prep for exams and score 99.9% or 2400. When these pansied and doted over kids fail to get into Ivy then start incoherently bitching and moaning their child's bought seat was stolen by a minority, athlete, from the sticks or the hood. Keep on popping those pills. |
| My DD is at NCS US (so this info might not be useful to you) but her class probably has 15% of student who are ADD, most are medicated. I do not think you could get through that school non-medicated if you were ADHD, especially in US. The US support staff is good, I don't think they have an equivalent staff for the LS. |
| OP here. Thanks for the input. Child is well controlled, not seeking special services or accommodations, just want to know if he'll even be considered. |
What grade is your DS currently in? |
This is absurd and frank abuse. |
What? I also have a DD at NCS who has ADHD and I could have written this post (though I am unaware of any stats for the school). My DD is an A student by the way, happy and thriving. I've tried to ignore the many posts here from parents who don't have kids with ADHD and are somehow, for some reason, angry at those of us who do and want to attack us, question us, when jeez all we're trying to do is treat a medical condition. Accusing us of abuse is completely unacceptable. Hateful, actually. Perhaps you are reacting to the part where PP says it would be difficult to get through the school unmedicated. Speaking for my DD, it would be difficult to get through any school unmedicated. PP is offering concrete advice in response to a specific question. If you can't be supportive and have nothing to offer, butt out. |

No. I shall not. Do you believe that 15% of children/kids in any school system on earth should be appropriately medicated for ADHD? This is the point. Deal with it. The point does not refer to kids who are appropriately medicated for this condition. I'm sorry you do not have the mental, emotional or psychological constitution to deal with the real issue here...the over abundance of kids medicated inappropriately for this diagnosis.

| The latter situation is frank abuse (economic, political, medical/health and pscychosocial) |
What? An A grade/student is a\ justification for medication abuse! What does anyone's grades (even at NCS) have to do with the issue at hand? I am happy your child is the number one student at NCS with her solid A average ( definition of an A student I presume). |
