| Most Africans are more welcoming of foreigners than most people in the West are of Africans. |
| Surprised nobody mentioned Namibia...I liked it there. Not crazy about Cairo, it's very chaotic. And culturally it doesn't really feel like "Africa". (Yes, yes, I know it is...but to me, NA feels different. And Arabic helps. |
One word: Rape. Even baby girls. Have you been living under a rock? |
| Re rape of babies. Isn't that because they believe it will heal them from AIDS? |
Nam has a wierd feel to it. Beautiful scenery, yes, but kinda feels like apartheid never really left South West Africa. |
What about Dakar, Senegal do you like? |
I would say the same thing, ironic b/c it's one of the more developed nations in SA. I lived there for about a year and a half in 1993-94, and many of the Americans I knew were brutally attacked in some way either via robbery/theft or rape. Black or white or brown, it didn't matter. I hear that now it's gotten worse. And living behind a wall of razor wire with a private police force to answer your call just sounds like a cuh=rayzee way to live. (I was doing volunteer work "out in the bush" where it was relatively safer, as compared to, say Johannesburg (hell hole) or Cape Town (beautiful) or Durban (upredictable). |
| If English is a must, I would say Ghana as well. The food is great, people are really, really nice, and it is way cheaper than the neighboring francophone countries. Otherwise I would say Cotonou, Benin because it is really laid back and safe plus has the francophone culture that I like. Before the civil war and all of the lingering tension I would have said Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire. |
| Ghana. Lots of ex-pats in Accra. Can have a nice quality of life at low cost. |
Generally safe, liveable, boutiques, cafes, ocean. |
| A big no to Sierra Leone. I spent some time in Freetown, and heard it accurately referred to as "Hell's Basement." |

I have only seen one mention of Ethiopia. I lived there with my two children as an expat for three years. Very safe, no risk of Malaria in the city. We never worried for our safety while there. A k-12 international school, a large expat crowd and a great host country. Ethiopians are very kind and welcoming. Also has a very good and safe airline and airport offering daily flights to other African countries as well as Europe. Medical care is not great but there are one or two hospitals in the city that are good as well as some well trained doctors. Also the most amazing weather.
Have fun! we loved our time on the African Continent and enjoyed all of the different travel to various countries. |
Do they have problems with electricity and water, is internet service reliable? How about the roads. |

Here is a typical South African crime story. |

I visited South Africa/Johannesburg 12 years ago and learned that you could not even walk down the sidewalk in broad daylight. Also, when driving thru downtown Jo'burg, you could not stop at red lights but roll thru. Otherwise, you'd get carjacked. There's the constant fear of attack.
