This is a red flag for sure.
This mindset is always "what can I get"? And not "What can I give back?" They make the worst citizens.
Also, it extends to "what is the other guy getting and should he be getting it" - the worst kinds of hall monitors, grifters.

WTF? Do you treat your employer like a charity and regularly give back? Work overtime for no pay? Go the extra mile for no particular reason? If he gets meals comp'd then he should take the benefit. Do you work for free?

Seems cheap. At least he was transparent and did it in front of you??

He’s cheap and dishonest.

Move on.

Yes even if not dishonest he’s still cheap and wants to show he’s going to be that way from the start. I could see this as normal for committed partners but not at a first romantic date

The cheap one is the one who didn't split the bill or offer to pay.

Not true - he asked her out for lunch. He pays. If he wanted to be a saver he could have offered a coffee date . Would have allowed him to follow standard dating etiquette (which most women still value a lot), and show at least some chivalry.

Could he be traveling and dating?

If his work is 50-90 percent travel then maybe okay, yeah, I would ask for clarification just in case. The stipend/per dime is legit to cover meals which would be dumb not to claim for it just because he invited a date out.

why are you so nosy about how he is paying the bill?

Why did you take this comment about this personality to be about work only?

He picked up the tab immediately but then he asked the waiter for the itemized bill so that obviously he could expense it to his company. I found that to be so utterly uncharming. Not so much being cheap, but more being dishonest.

Am I making something out of nothing?

Did he tell you that he needed an itemized bill so he could expense it to his employer? Or are you just assuming that’s what he plans to do.

I always request itemized bills to just to check and make sure the restaurant didn’t charge me for something I didn’t order.

Did you offer to pay your half?

I agree OP must not think very highly of him if her initial reaction is a negative inference regarding his character.

So you’re assuming that he is expensing the bill or did he tell you he was expensing the bill? Anyway, it’s weird you would jump to that conclusion immediately.

Many people, if traveling with a spouse, will split the check between a corporate card and personal. Work will pay for employee’s meal expenses but not spouses.

I wouldn’t jump to malfeasance.

He is married and he can't have it on his personal credit card. Duh.

This.
Some consulting jobs get this perk and some companies provide lunch or a lunch perk of money. I had this at a small NY company.

OP is one of those people who immediately assumes the worst of others even when she is like a clueless child with no concept of what is really going on. The kind of person who makes suggestions at a new job that are laughable to anyone with experience. This guy dodged a bullet.
