Psa-food aid for pregnant women proposed to be cut

During the pandemic, Congress temporarily tripled these fruit and vegetable vouchers, and the USDA later formalized those higher amounts. The new legislative package rolls back these levels to pre-pandemic amounts.

WIC (women, infant, child (up to age 5) was never designed to be like food stamps / snap to reduce hunger. It was to target 5 foods that had specific nutrients that were found to be lacking in pregnant women and infants.

The original five things were: Milk, Cheese, Eggs, Infant Formula, Iron-Fortified Breakfast Cereal, and Fruit Juice. The reason fruit juice was chosen and not actual fruit is that the government relied entirely on high-vitamin fruit juice to deliver Vitamin C, because juice is shelf-stable and easy for small corner grocery stores to stock.

Let say you just gave birth and you have a 3 year old. You get on WIC per month:

Up to 7 gallons of milk (can swap some of the milk for up to 2 pounds of cheese and 32 ounces of yogurt)

2 dozen large eggs

72 ounces of breakfast cereal per month.

72 ounces (4.5 pounds) of Whole Grains (Bread, Tortillas, Rice, or Pasta)

Protein Staples (Peanut Butter & Beans ): One 16-18 oz jar of peanut butter AND a 1-pound bag of dry beans (or 4 cans) plus a choice of EITHER one jar of peanut butter OR a 1-pound bag of dry beans.

272 fluid ounces of fruit juice per month.

9 cans of powder formula (this is probably worth at least $200)

plus $74.00 cash for fresh fruits and vegetables - this is what is being cut

WIC participants earning under 130% of the Fed Poverty Line also can get food stamps.

The way the system is set up is there is a massive incentive not to get married if there are two working adults. So people are up in arms about fruits and vegetables being cut instead of lobbying to raise the income cap for people who can qualify for WIC.

Keep God out of this - it’s 100% Republicans’ doing or not doing.

The thing with WIC is that it helps families that make too much for food stamps-so, helps working families who probably don't qualify for anything else, and married families

I was a young parent (am now an old parent lol) and had WIC and myself and everyone I knew who was working and on it, went on to decades of employment and taxpaying. My kids were born healthy and good weight, and breastfed. The WIC investment in my family has paid off many times over-my kids are taxpaying adults now!
